Be nice. Teams work harder when they feel respected and listened to.

Build your team on a foundation of trust and respect. Treat them all like people, that they have lives and families, that they get sick and life happens (marriage, kids are born, divorce, death. Trust them, communicate broadly, and believe in them. Support them. Take a genuine interest in them. And care about them. When your team knows you'll go to hell and back for them, they will go to hell and back for you in return.

like

Trust but verify often early on. Give people enough space to show what they can do, but not enough where you can’t fix a critical mistake

like

Just be a real person. If something sucks admit is sucks. Believe in your team and let them know how you like to work. Ask team what you could do better. Feedback goes both ways.

like

It’s a team of individuals, treat them like it. Work with them where they are (strengths, areas of growth, learning) and don’t pit them against each other.

like

Just because they haven‘t done it how you would have done it doesn‘t make it bad

like

Good advice. Something I struggled with at first.

Proper delegation goes a long way. Helps both the manager and the team - growth on both fronts, guaranteed.

like

Treat your team like adults and make them feel like they have a say because they do. Being a great leader doesn't mean that you have all the answers, but that you know who to go to when you don't.

^^ Couldn’t recommend this more. Just be nice.

My 4 YO takes riding lessons at a small barn outside of the city. I hopped on a horse there recently for old time's sake, but haven't really ridden in years. Advice wanted: My firm lied about our raises this year. They said we’d match the other top 10 firms, and that was absolute BS. I’m having a hard time staying motivated. I’m doing senior level work without the title or pay. Fresh college grads are getting paid more than me. I’m already job searching, but I feel bad that I don’t have the same drive as I did before when I thought I would be receiving a proper raise. I learned my lesson. Any advice for a young professional?

Yesterday was a good day. I was really impressed with myself. I woke up at 5, practiced dance lessons, did two water colors, made breakfast and tea, got to work by 10, put in 8-10 hours of solid work and then came home. It’s been ages since I painted or danced. However today, I slept till 7:00, did not work out or have food. Still got to work by 10 and did 8 solid hours of work. Some days are good and some are just okay. And that is okay. Trying to build on my good days and we all can. :)

Recently lateralled to a new firm and I have mild “PTSD” from my old firm 😶 everything from the way docs are saved on the system, file naming, email writing style, team conventions etc - I keep thinking any small mistake would get me yelled at / be at the receiving end of snarky or passive aggressive emails but people at my new firm are so lovely and far from that. I’m trying really hard to move past this and my new colleagues are probably getting sick of my questions 😂 Anyone else can relate?
