What's the most troubling news your manager has ever given you/your team? Did they do a good job of delivering it?

"I know I said we'd roll you off to a different workstream, but you've already made so much headway here [with this dickhead client lead who everyone on the team and in the client org hates], and it would be a shame to lose that momentum, so we're keeping you on for 3 more months [of abuse since you're used to it now anyway and we don't want to expose any new team members to him].

I know it's not what you want to hear, but all of leadership knows what you're dealing with and we all really appreciate you taking one for the team."

That delivery was certainly better than if they'd simply said, "you're a sacrificial lamb lol."

Back when my company was acquired by IBM India, they decided to remove the pool, ping pong tables and free coffee/tea to put more cubicles. The managers told us it was not for cost reduction but to rather align with IBM's core values.

My SM: "Client has decided to roll back the solution you architected 6 months after go-live...on your birthday...and you can't roll off now...and you have to work the next 3 weekends to build contingency plans and support the roll back."

Thanks for sharing! Can't believe they linked that to values 🙄

Wow! Thanks for sharing every body

I had a manager (not in consulting) once tell us what a client's work stream paid the company, and then what each of us cost. He then put up a slide with all of our names and asked who he should fire if we lost that client. This happened because we all missed an email to the support inbox. I would not say this was a good job of delivering bad news.

One of the team members got laid off, M was super thoughtful and did a great job at communicating this to the people who were closest to that team member. Called us aside to a conference room and basically said that he disagreed but that everything was going to be OK

Seeing some men get more leadership face time and more options to participate in meaningful activities with sr leadership. It’s a sure way to prepare them for more sr roles. I also heard that some leaders view me as a great No. 2 (operational partner) have you had this happen? How did you change that perception. I’ve started asking for this it now. Let’s see how it goes.

Hi 🐠- question for you guys. My cousin is an alcoholic and has struggled to remain sober over the past few months. He and his wife purchased a breathalyzer about a year ago, and my cousin is now suggesting that he send his family members (wife, siblings, parents) regular screenshots of his breathalyzer results as a means to hold him accountable. As someone that grew up around addiction, this sounds like a recipe for strained relationships and animosity, but what are your guys thoughts?
