What’s the rationale behind not stating your return date in your out of office reply? Power move or some greater purpose being served here?

Clear communication of “I do not care about any of you.”

First, when you do that, the day you get back everyone bombards you, and you have no time to get your bearings. You know that day after vacation mad dash where you’re trying to get caught up on old emails and settle in and everyone and their mom is calling you with new emergencies and how awful that is?

Second, what if something happens, and my flight is delayed or there’s some emergency? People are twice as pissed if you say you’ll be back Monday and end up coming back Tuesday or Wednesday than if you don’t say when you’re coming back at all. It’s in line with under promise but overdeliver.

Third, it’s none of my coworkers’ business other than the ones I’m already working with. I’ll tell everyone else when I get back. The ones I work directly with on files already know when I’m leaving and when I get back.

A3 that’s one of the biggest reasons why

I never say my return date lol, but neither do most people at my firm.

I tell people who I work with when it will be out of courtesy. I don't owe that to anyone (other than HR, maybe), and neither do you.

Depends. Even if I do, I tend to respond to them 1-2x in the day.

Few tips to improve your visual design skills

- Learn Typography: Typography is essential because 60-70% of user interfaces are about written content displayed in a meaningful way.

- Learn Layout and Composition: You don’t need to be pixel perfect, but if you place labels 10px above inputs, you must do that consistently across your whole design.

- Learn Color: Color doesn't need to be complex. Understand how colors interact with each other and learn how color can set moods.

Is anyone wary of non-lockstep compensation? I interviewed at a firm recently and they explained their discretionary comp structure as a very rigorous and time consuming exercise that takes into account feedback from every partner and other factors that they didn't really identify. I asked associates if they thought this process disadvantages minorities and their answer was that they felt properly compensated. The candidate was too stunned to speak. Jk but the answers really confused me

Thoughts on quitting to travel for a few months (in the future) from a top firm as a 6th year in lending? Confirmed I can’t get unpaid time off (another associate asked & was rejected). Is it career suicide? Ideally would go in house after, but nervous about the resume gap / hardos will think I had a mental break. Ideally my firm will take me back, but after that time off, idk if I can come back to biglaw. Not stress / burnout related - just want to travel b4 kids / have the $$
