What’s the real difference between a verbal and written offer? If I accept the verbal offer, then see all the nitty gritty details in the written offer, I still have room and time to negotiate, right?

Why would the written be different than what you accepted verbally? The whole point of doing verbals is so that by the time the deal is printed up, you’re just verifying everything you’ve already agreed to.

Agree with most comments. In my current company and in big companies that I’ve worked for (Fortune 50 and 25) the verbal offer is when you negotiate. Once you agree to a verbal offer, it gets sent to a Compensation committee for approval. If it’s approved, a written offer is generated. If you disagree to the offer terms, the offer typically gets rescinded, and the offer goes to the next candidate.

(The written offer has stipulations such as 10 days to accept, and consequences when candidates rescind— cannot re-apply for a year.)

Then in your experience, are recruiters able to make an unapproved offer and ask if the candidate is willing to entertain it for them to try to get approval?

If there are things that are important to you beyond salary and benefits, like flexible hours, WFH, an upcoming vacation you need to still take, etc. make sure to bring them up before the offer is written.

That’s why we want to talk it through first. Get all those things lined up so there aren’t 17 written drafts that have to be signed off before handing over.

No you should not be negotiating by the time you get to a written offer- it should just be verifying what you discussed verbally. Written offer is usually 1-2 pages long, there’s not much “nitty gritty”

Ask everything in writing. Before even making a decision.

Until things are signed, nothing is concrete. That seems suspect, though. Accept the “verbal offer” and get it in writing. If there’s a change, deny and run immediately.

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I am a senior auditor, I have been approached by my company to join the bookkeeping and outsourcing team as a senior accountant. My background is 4 years in bookkeeping, 3 years working in industry doing financial reporting. Have 1 year tax and about a year of audit. Currently at 85k. What salary should I negotiate for?

A colleague of mine just informed me that she earns more than me. Not a lot. $1000. We both manage optometry practices for a large chain. I've been with company seven years and a manager for four. She joined the company a year ago with no optical experience. Her store is busier than mine, but I have the optical skills and she's still learning. I feel like we should be at least on the same level. Thoughts?

Citi - SVP Salary Expectations for Tech / Controls

Looking at some SVP roles for technology / controls in the Southwest region. Glassdoor indicates $185-240k as range base comp, and target of $185-205k for average base. Is that accurate?

Glassdoor also targets $40k for variable comp. average. Is that accurate?

Originally interviewed for Community Relations Coordinator for set asking salary of $65k. Now owner wants to change title to Branch Manager, increased responsibilities, but primarily still CRC role. Same salary and now will decrease to $50k after one year with an increasing commission rate. The idea behind this is motivation to earn more than set salary. At this point, I need the income and am not planning on staying longer than the year, if that. Is it worth negotiating? Any advice welcome.

Anyone knows what salary range to expect from Raytheon / Collins Aerospace / Pratt & Whitney for a Project Eng P4 level in FL?

The job listing has a salary range of 102-182k, when I spoke to recruiter she said it’s 145-155k. I didn’t mention I saw a different range on the listing. Is she trying to low ball me ? Does the range on the listing mean much ?

I just received a job offer at a company I'm very interested in working for (yay!). Their salary offer, however, is at the bottom end of the range specified in the job ad. In my initial interview, I said that my salary expectations align with the range specified by the ad. So, my question is do I ask for more? Or do I just accept the offer? The company benefits are decent and I would get stock options, and it's fully remote - if that influences your answer.

What do y'all think?

Running in my 8th year in construction here in the SE. In my second job right now as a PM and Risk Management (5th year). I have a Masters Degree in Construction and additional certification programs from Cornell University, I think I am good with the pay I am getting (FOR NOW!) BUT

Currently get paid 10 PTO+6 holidays in addition to winter shutdowns from December 24th to Jan1st. Hence the PTO is limited to 10 for new hires upto completion of 5 years.

Is this a fair PTO for someone in year 8?
