I think roughly 16 weeks if I recall when we adopted our dog, but that was also 3.5 years ago. Why don’t you just ask your vet ?

like

I should clarify our dog was female so she was spayed, so not sure if that changes anything. But, a vet should know.

Many boarding/daycares will make exceptions I’ve found :) I told them I was waiting until 9 months to neuter on advice of my vet and they were super chill about it. My guy also wasn’t a humper so no big issues. I urge you to wait as long as possible to fix your dog. It’s an important part of maturity for a dog, and there have been plenty of studies to suggest that waiting longer will result in more confidence/less behavior problems etc. I second talking with your vet to get their opinion :)

Feel sad because ? Because you’re taking away his manhood ? The argument against doing it too early is it stunts growth. it’s definitely the responsible thing to do as a dog owner. Ask your vet. And it’s far less intrusive than a spay.

Follow your vet. I got my pup nipped at 9 months.

For big dogs there’s a lot of research that says the longer you hold out, there’s reduced chances of certain types of cancer and other issues. We don’t have either of our dogs neutered just as a data point. We have somebody stay at our house when we’re out of town vs. boarding them.

Yeah these kind of comments need to be researched or answered by a vet before someone makes a mistake

Mine have both gotten neutered/spayed at eight weeks old. We got them from a rescue and the rescue will not adopt out dogs that aren’t fixed. So we didn’t have any choice in it. But they both are doing great and super healthy. Oldest one is almost 8 years old.

The current wisdom from vet researchers is apparently that early neutering does a lot of harm and you should wait till 18-24 months so that all the growth phase is over for the dog .

Mine was about 8 months old.

Mine is a corgi and recommendations from some were as early as 6 months and from others after 1yr to reduce future risk of hip problems. Advice varies widely by breed, but even widely amongst the “experts” in that particular breed.

So I just got a pup and went to the vet for his first checkup visit yesterday I asked the same question, and the vet said that there was just a study conducted at UC-Davis where puppies that get neutered at 6 months had an 80% chance of certain health issue (I believe it was related to hips). When done at one year, it dropped down to 20%. My family’s dog is 8 and was actually never neutered and still has perfect hips. I’m going to wait a bit longer.

Thanks for the notes all. Our vet seems to think it’s fine re the timing.. But I don’t know what they’re assessing against to tell that. Maybe I should check on that.. And VP2: yes sad about taking the puppy’s manhood and that this is a surgery. The arguments for doing it are all valid… but still..

Mine was neutered at around 3 months at a shelter and he's almost 6 now with good health.
