What's the robotics/mechatronics industry like in today's market? As a new grad student, I'm trying to understand if this is a good career path or not. Any tips?

I’m an SD II and my manager just put in his two weeks notice. My director ( my managers boss ) asked if I was interested in interviewing for the manager position. It would be like skipping a level / double promotion. It seems like a huge opportunity, but it would mean no more coding, and I’m not sure I ever really want to stop coding.
