Do not think in terms of percentage increase. This is a critical time for women to think of salary goals in terms of how a company values the work, not what you got paid before.
Immediately read “Ask For More” by Alex Carter for more guidance on how to negotiate! You want to be at the top of the price band for the role.
Visualize a spreadsheet with the role and a number next to it. (This exists)
You need to get all of what’s on that line at the very least, regardless of what you are paid now.
I was promoted after not having had a salary review for 18 months and offered a 6% increase. The market rate for the role I was given was approx. 15-20% higher, but HR wouldn't budge. That tells me they don't value the extra responsibility, and extra time required, within the new role - therefore leaving deflated and open to having my head turned.
Benchmark against other sources (external from salary surveys and other job postings) and then present that back to them as 'this bracket is market rate for the role and therefore due to my fit and experience I would be happy to accept X amount. If it was a new company you'd do that, so treat internal the same. I hope you have more luck than I did!
Thanks - I will! 😊
Depends on company. Do you research on what you should be paid. They will try and offer lowest possible so make a case first. I’ve heard 10% is norm for promos but I feel it’s low
