Going to recycle an old reply...
At $50k, the target was $75k because I was tired of carrying laundry around on the weekend and would be all set if I had a place with a washing machine inside of the apt.
At $75k, the target was $100k because it was time to not have roommates anymore
At $100k, the target was $150k because maybe I should buy the apt instead of renting
At $150k, the target was $200k because a 1 bedroom apartment is obviously too small and a 2 bedroom condo is all that I would ever need
$200k became $300k overnight because I got married and it became household income instead of just my income
At $300k, the target became $400k because we had kids, and they are freakin expensive
At $400k, the target became $500k because we needed to buy a house in the really good school district
At $500k, the target became $600k because apparently my kids would fail at life in a public school (like the one we just moved for or the one I went to as a kid) and the private school is supposedly so much better because of a reason I can’t remember anymore
At $600k, the target became $700k because I drastically underestimated how much private school costs
At $700k, the target became $800k because apparently a house with 4 bathrooms was too small for 4 people living in it
At $800k, the target became $900k because having a vacation home that you can rent out would basically pay for itself (found out that this is not true BTW)
At $900k now, I guess the target is $1M because apparently college is going to cost 5000% more than it cost when I went, and making my kids pay for it themselves (like I did) is setting them up for a catastrophic decade of stress that no safe zone time out could mitigate.
So... to answer the question. I have no idea what the target is. When I look back on it, I would be fine now carrying my laundry around on the weekends.
Those of us with student loans and living in cities still can't get places with laundry at 500k.

Too many consultants posting here and making me feel like I'm getting paid nothing lol
If you're posting 160K+ amounts and don't live in one of the most expensive cities or have kids.... Lol... What are you actually after? I'm living pretty comfortably on 35K so everything else just gravy. I've already bought enough nice things over the years to keep me satisfied. More travel and vacations is the only thing missing I suppose?

Damn, no scholarships or AP credits?

I’d be happy with 100k between 30-32, outside public accounting. I feel like that salary with no debt would be good. I don’t need to be greedy or make a million dollars to be happy and secure.
RSM1 where I am I have a 2200 mortgage (PITI) for 877 sq ft 2/1 with a 400 sqft studio guesthouse and a tiny yard

Lol I can’t believe some people make this much money (white collar work isn’t the world I was born into... I never knew business people could make this much).... anywho, I’m a 23F who makes $50k, which is already the same as my mom made at the height of her career... I’d love to make it up to $75/80k, but I can’t imagine making much more than that in ad account management (my dream job, which I love... so no regrets😊)

Hi AAE! Love that you love the work, there’s not enough account people that do. The money gets a lot better, the business challenges get more challenging but also more interesting, and the ad world is small so your relationships deepen. I started at $37K AAE > $57k > $80-90k then promo to $110k > $198K. I’m 32F/NYC for reference.
Male, currently making 165K at 25. Would be satisfied with 500K at 30-32
You are right not 500K, but several principals have exited for 500K. And if you make the partner move before exiting that’s huge
My starting salary in advertising at 22 years old was 19K. After 7 years I worked my way up to Senior Copywriter, 45K. Went in-house creative at a fashion pub, after 7 more years made 110K. Returned to agency at 36 years old. 7 years later, I’m at 220K which has been reduced to 215K due to Covid Cutbacks. I’m female and white, so I’m aware of my privilege and I am proud that my agency has committed to hiring Black, Latinx, LGBTQI talent. I have been lucky to work with, mentor and learn from many people of color who have had to work so much harder to overcome the ingrained racial bias and lack of outreach and support in our industry. So while I applaud the 💰 goals above, I am becoming acutely aware of those who haven’t had the same access and opportunities. Share the wealth. Encourage your senior leadership to hire outside of typical agency channels. The culture is shifting in the right direction. Be part of the change or become the dinosaur trying to pitch BLM content with no insight, true voices, or credible, valuable cultural context. Rant over. For now.

If I had family money I certainly would not work at Deloitte.
You’ll never be satisfied with the amount of money you make. Trust me, it’s a bottomless pit.
When I was in undergrad, making $30k straight out of school, I said that was going to be more than enough. Here I am, many years later, making more than $30k and only after many years did I come to accept that I will never be happy with the amount of money I make, so that shouldn’t be my drive. Focus on setting goals and working towards achieving those. Think of your life goals similar to work related goals. SMART. To achieve some of your goals you need money, which is just the reality of life, but once you’ve achieved them, don’t let the money continue to drive your decision making.
$50k at 22, $100k at 25, $0 at 30, $300k at 35, $500k at 40.
41m, been satisfied the whole way
I see. I’m sensing my comp starting to flat out once I got to $400k range.

Right now I’m making around 50k a year after college. It’s barely enough to pay rent and loans, I live in a major city and things get real pricy over here. It’s still more than what both my parents are making combined.
I plan to get promoted to a mid seniority role after one more year and ask for 65k. (23)
Two years from now the goal is to get hired at a bigger company and make 75k that’ll allow me to move to a 1bdr and actually live instead of surviving. (24)
Hopefully by 30 I’ll be making 100k. Enough for a 2 bedroom apt (one to serve as a studio) since I want to freelance full time. I’d have finished paying off my student loans by then and would be able to make greater contributions to my plus loans.
Honestly once I pay off all my loans I just want to live my best life.
@freelancead thank you, I will!
@D5 my job right now isn’t ideal but there’s Tim for growth + I’m starting to enjoy it.
I would rather do work that I enjoy and get paid for it than make work I don’t care about and make bank. That would just kill me mentally.
Also, can’t really afford to take any risks right now with the job market 🤷♀️
Can somebody ban consultants from this app please
We make this app.
140k, 31. Happy right now, good wlb. No idea in the future, want to start my own business since consulting isn’t for me so my happy salary in the future would be one that I’m not barely making ends meet lol.
No just bachelors

31M making 130 currently, I'd be targeting 200 by 35. I thought I was doing well for myself, this post makes me question some of my decisions.

Unlese you're in San Fran or NYC, that's plenty and you're doing great. If you be ignoring all the post where people are directly telling you that it's never enough
I'm pretty happy now with 450k at 28 but ideally I'd like to be at 600k by 30.
Awesome, glad to have you here :)

22 years: $19k right out of school (CS degree)
24 years: $22k
25 years: $24k
28 years: $38k - $65k
34 years: $72k (jumped to consulting as SC)
48 years: $251k (promo to Director)
52 years: $365k left consulting for industry
I’m okay with my path. It is what it is.

Well from 34-48, I moved from SC to M, to Spec leader, back to SM, and then Director. A bit of a circuitous path to say the least. A 14-year mission.
Found the promo to Director to be rather “meh” and decided to leave after a few years. Guess I expected more than what it was. And made more in industry in the end
Female making 160k + stocks at 28. Will be looking to make $200k + stocks by 30 and $500k in total comp by 35. So far done a great job at avoiding lifestyle inflation. I live in a nice 1-bedroom outside of SF (more space less money) with my SO and we plan to keep it that way for a long time. Planning to stop working forever by late 30s.
Thanks MC1☺️ CD3, don’t worry about it, it’ll happen :) CW i’m art and work in-house in tech. Was freelance up until age 27 and got exhausted by the solo hustle. You can do it!

130K by 34 (currently 31). I'm male.
At this salary I feel like I would be able to very easily hit my financial independence goals and easily have enough to cover helping my mom through her soon retirement being able to support her with with 10K to 15K a year if necessary while still being to save at least 40K annually.
TBH I'm doing very well at my current salary and even if I was locked at my current salary, I would still be in a great position.
If I make it to 150K and the work is not substantially more stressful, then the finances are easy mode for me. If I hit this and I'm in a position to move from the city for whatever reason, I'm no doubt buying a something like a Model 3 and won't even be bothered. At 150K I'd be easily saving 70K a year.
What jobs do you guys have that you make do much? 😂 I guess I shouldn't be in PA?
