What’s the scene like in Chicago? Also, is it a good place to raise a fam?

I can’t speak to the creative side (I’m in analytics) but I’ve been in Chicago since ‘96. I’m a NY transplant and much prefer the Midwest - strong work ethic, lots of culture, but not the “always on” mentality of NY. It’s a big help when raising a family (and I have two kids, one in middle school and one in HS). Feel free to DM and I can try and help you with perspective and other context .

Leo/FCB/Unlimited going through rough patches. Leo has been bleeding staff like mad. FCB leadership is a big ? And DDB just stole Britt Nolan from Leo. Or he was pushed out. Or nobody knows. But Leo stole Liz Taylor. Or she was pushed out of FCB. Or nobody knows. CCO Maxham at DDB is still there, but will Britt shake things up? Nobody knows. Hernandez left Ogilvy for Allstate CCO, not sure what that means for Leo. Or Ogilvy. BBDO is pretty quietly doing okay. McGarry has been very quiet. Cramer is relatively invisible. Maybe somebody from there can chime in. A few smaller shops doing okay, HighDive basically lifted Jeep from DDB. OKRP gets some press too. EscapePod seems decent. In general, the Cannes-y work has been side projects, gun control/museums. There are big, sexy-ish legacy accounts around but Allstate and State Farm are apparently shaky. MillerCoors is still spread around town. SC Johnson is quietly keeping doors open. But, well, Wieden and Chiat are going hard after McDonald’s. Is it a disaster for Unlimited/DDB? Nobody knows. Yet. Maybe someone can chime in. Chicago is awweesome in summer. Sucks bad in winter. A million nice suburban enclaves and much of the city are family friendly. Certain rough neighborhoods give the town a bad name, but it’s a huge, sprawled place. Good public transport and plenty of amazing food/culture. Industry in flux, but worth a look.

the scene is great. i moved here from the east coast last year and couldn't be happier. people are friendly and direct, there's some kind of street fest or block party happening every single week in the summer, and the bar/restaurant scene is top notch. you can raise the SHIT out of a family here.

likefunny

I do that regardless of city

Families look really happy there. Perfect mix of big city and nature. Have friends who live in like a Carrol Gardens-like neighborhood and they pay $2100 for something that looks like $5,000 in Brooklyn + mad backyard in a chichi looking street by a park, zoo and lake.

Haha I don’t know about the “nature” part but it’s a nice place to chill for sure

Great place for fam if you don't mind the extreme temps. Market has been rough with leo constantly losing biz and having layoffs, creative execs at fcb abandoning ship, and now we are unlimited losing what sounds like most of mcds, but if you can help turn any of those ships around, could be a good opp. Hope to work with you down the road.

We look like we’re doing great. But in reality, we’ve turned into a sweat shop. And our CFO is nasty and pinches more pennies each day

I would guess you’re asking because you’re considering pursuing the CCO vacancy at Leo. I will stay in Chicago if that happens. 👏👏👏

Like, the agency scene? I thought you were consulting to end agencies. 😉 Or are you taking the Leo or WAU job?

Chicago is f’in great btw

Overall, I would agree it’s a good place to raise a family. One watch out, the areas with the best public schools have ridiculous taxes. I lived in both NY and Chicago and my taxes were higher in the latter. If someone is looking to live in suburbs, the commuter trains in Chicago don’t run as frequently as Metro North or NJ Transit, so unless you time it just right, there’s more waiting for a train.

I can’t speak for the Ad market there but I know a lot of people that really love the city and are doing the family thing as well. Good luck

I enjoyed my 3 years in Chicago (with kids) for all the above reasons. Ultimately we left after layoffs and having no other family around anywhere nearby.

Any CD/AD openings?

If only my partner was wanting to move to Chicago.

The burbs are great too. Amazing schools and the city is easily accessible

Wait, didn't you freelance in Chicago? During the winter, I believe.

Yeah I freelanced for a few weeks about four years ago. But pretty much stuck to the route between my hotel and the agency

Hi I have a real question that is going to cause a lot of controversy but it gets me so upset every time this happens. In casting and director searching, the request is always “non-white and female if possible”. It’s like I get more ‘brownie points’ for the most diverse person I can find. I don’t remember the last time I posted a casting request and was allowed to ask for white applicants. Isn’t this reverse discrimination? This can’t be the answer to equality. Am I crazy or unfair??
