Debatably legal-ish, but my honest thought right now is: who’s going to try and sue a teacher reading to their class. I think the main issue would probably be access to public. If you make your video accessible only via link, that adds a layer of protection as well because it’s less widely visible. Alternatively, you could make the video and keep it on your own platforms. Google classroom, on canvas, email out the link from your google drive etc. That keeps it off public sites which should help
ALSO I had seen some publishers have been putting out info on how to create video read alouds legally, but I can’t speak to specifics. I think it was something about making sure to credit the publisher in addition to the author/illustrator?
Or, look up some of the celebrities reading books out loud. They have a YouTube channel...StorylineOnline looks really good. Of course, I don’t know what y’all who teach the wee ones need but I’ve loved watching them.
But my students have already voiced their preference to my reading. Just stay away from anything Disney. Their legal departments are barracudas!
Why not do Prezi video and send it out to kids or post to Google Classroom or whatever platform you are using?
If y’all are on twitter, I know Jerry Palotta, Dan Gutman and others are doing daily live read alouds of their books.
I know there are other story/read aloud platforms already out there, but I’d really like to read these stories myself for my kids
Here’s what I replied to someone else asking the same question:

I know with music you usually have to site and say “I do not own the rights to this material” and that usually lets you get around that. I wonder if it works for books too. Like posting the title author publisher and “I do not ...”
