What’s the typical severance when you’re fired ? I want to know if I should keep hanging on or just GTFO ...

Every place is different, but the typical set up is: 2 weeks of you're there 2 years or less. Then add approx one week per year.

^ agree this is pretty typical

Also know that you can negotiate a layoff. Ask for more weeks or pay, healthcare etc. I was recently let go and I negotiated and got a better package as a result.

I’ve done same. You write a letter telling them how you think what they are offering isn’t fair and how hard it could’ve to get a new job and what a good job you did while there and that you are in competition with everyone else like you they laid off and then hope they offer more. Don’t just ask for money - ask them to cover your healthcare - etc. sometimes those things come from Different buckets of money and you get more there but not more cash. But you have to have had some decent reputation and a challenging personal situation.

Don’t quit without a job. Get fired or laid off. Severance or not, you won’t get unemployment (in most states) unless you’re fired or laid off. States, like New York, will often side with the employee...and unless you did something wild, most employers won’t even bother fighting It.

Ha. Just was laid off and got 2 freaking weeks after 4 years! Gotta love Omnicom!

My situation was that given my performance that I deserve more weeks than what they providing. As it was performance related and I was getting my full performance bonus, I felt asking for more time was warranted. So I negotiated for 2 extra weeks plus commuting expenses lost in cancelled transit tickets. Moving forward I'll be making sure I put a severance clause into my contract when I sign on to a new agency. The higher up you get the longer it takes to find a new role.

Fired = zero. Laid off = very much depends. But most companies have no formal policy and no legal obligation

Seems like the standard is 2 weeks I think I’m GTFO. My sanity is worth more than 2 weeks

A little over a year ago, I posted about my boss making constant comments about my salary. Most comments said I must not have been performing well. I want to update that he was fired, not me.

I am curious to hear your honest thoughts. I don’t know what other firms have done but my firm has fired people, furloughed people, cut pay, delayed promotions and hire dates, etc. but also has allocated a chunk of change above what has been given in the past to support social justice causes. While I support the cause I wonder how associates feel about this when frankly some of it is at their expense?
