Ask. If competing deadlines, name drop the more important person and/or ask them to “help prioritize” aka pit them against one another.

I agree, but I assume if OP had the experience to have that insight they wouldn’t have to ask the question.
If the partners need quick results, draft a short memo explaining the limits of what you’ve been able to accomplish and what you will delve into further if needed. Bottom line - get a sense of scope if you need to and don’t jump to conclusions about complexity. Once you dig into it you may find one or more of the issues easy to tackle.
Took your advice today and was able to knock out major issues on 2 of my memos! That relieved me of so much stress. Thank you!

ASAP is a good rule to follow, but how soon that is depends on the scope of the issues being researched. And if you have a lot on your plate, then you’d need to prioritize which comes first. What I used to do when a junior in private practice was assess how much time I could spend on each each day, then go from there and make sure everyone knew my schedule and time frame.
Thank you! I’ll try to implement this technique so I’ll have something to show at any given moment.
Same as the time it takes for a rundown
Ask with the context of what you have going on and frame in a way that you’re trying to fit it with what works best for them - “when do you need this by?/what works best for you to have this back to review? I have [insert assignment] that I need to turn around by [insert when] for [insert person], so want to make sure I’m planning out my schedule right.” I’ve also said sometimes “when do you want this by, having a deadline from you helps me set my own deadlines based on what else I have going on” and have generally received positive responses/relating to that, like “oh, I do the same thing” or “that works for me too” and then they give you a timeframe with more of an understanding of where you’re coming from

What if you’re assigned 4 research assignments on the same day by various shareholders 🥲?
I usually look into the assignment a bit to gauge how long it will take me (e.g., is this a seminal issue, or is this very few cases), then I email and let them know I’m planning to get it back to them by “[insert time], would that work for them?”
There’s no expected turnaround time for memos, since every research assignment is different. Sometimes I have an assignment that I could spend 8 hours on but I only have 2. I do my best.
