99% of the cases are failed stories.
Essentially was laughed at. If ya need more money ya gotta leave (or go to HR with an offer and see if they counter it, but even that's a rarity these days). Agencies are not a place of reason.
And how did I ask? Really rationally - I consulted my manager first, who was all for me but said I needed to speak with HR. Set up a meeting and then explained how I've been handling my current (outrageous) work load, how my clients have been consistently impressed with my work by either telling me directly or noting it to my manager, and how I enjoy working at the company but unfortunately the cost of living has gone up and I'm currently being paid below industry average for my position. Basically told that sometimes merit raises happen and that my manager will obviously be thinking of me if they do. Then the meeting awkwardly ended.
Fill your calendar with all your tasks, print your time sheets. Go in with facts in front of your boss/HR. I still didn't get it when I asked but when I gave my 2 weeks I was told that I could have gotten it had I gone in with the offer. Well ain't that a bitch because you got 3 people to replace me after I left. But couldn't give me a raise.
The best way? Resign.
