What’s the worst career advice you’ve gotten?

I graduated from college in the late 80s in the bay area and could have settled in Silicon Valley. I was told that the area was sleepy for business and should settle in SF or move to LA. I ended up in LA. I have friends who were in the mix of some of the most exciting companies and brands we know. Great to be employee #14 with equity at some of these places. They all had just enough experience to take on great and lucrative roles in the mid 90s. But my career has been good as well. Just different. Definitly incorrect advice about the area. Sleepy? Ha!

likefunnyhelpful

I've been told that Silicon Valley isn't "fun" because everyone is working really hard at actually doing things

“Pay your dues as a junior.” While I myself still see some value here in this bit of advice, this mindset kept me back by less talented seniors. Seniors who took credit for my work and saw me more as competition than a junior who could use advocacy and encouragement to move on and up in my career. As a CD I try my best to promote and encourage the people who report to me to move on and up when I see the opportunity. As you start you should put in the time and more effort to prove yourself. But be sure to know what you have when you have it and can back it up in your work. Then get that promotion sooner than later.

Work at a nonprofit.

Not true I made over $100k at a nonprofit

“Let your performance do all your taking for you.” That worked in competitive sports, but it doesn’t transfer well elsewhere.

Self-reviews are oddly important for this reason. Sell yourself so that your reviewer can just copy and paste the good stuff using your words.

“Don’t worry about work so much. Find your husband and focus on that. It’s more important.” (for real.)

I don’t think it’s a good or a bad advice. Everyone has their priorities. Some people prioritize their career, some prioritize relationships. These also change with age and circumstances. You do you OP. Don’t belittle the advice. Just agree to disagree.

I have a set of friends I used to hangout with a lot from work. Like everyday coffee breaks, walks, water cooler chats. Even hung out with them outside work. But the pandemic made me realize that they were all just that - “work friends.”

I was interviewing for my first accounting job in 2010. The interviewer told me "I always recommend people take a typing class". Typing class? I grew up with AIM. My "typing class" was being in the 8th grade and flirting with boys at my junior high via AIM and trying to convince them to ask me out on a "date" to get ice cream.

likefunny

I learned how to type quickly by playing Starcraft

Accounting is a secure job.. everyone failed to tell me it’s also boring AF and makes me feel like all I do is stare at PDFs and excel all day. I wish I would’ve gone into something less “secure” but more entertaining. I guess it’s never too late 🤷🏻‍♀️

likefunnyuplifting

You didn’t know Accounting was going to be boring? You thought Accounting was going to be exciting and fun?

Don’t eat time.

It just takes one blown budget and large write off to get a bad reputation. There are times when it is appropriate to eat time, if nothing else, to avoid an uncomfortable conversation or sometimes avoid slowing career progression.

(2012) Oracle 11i is hot. Learn that and you'll be set for life. Lmao. Worst advice ever. Proof that parents don't know everything either.

likefunny

A6 even IF they (parents) are successful in their careers, it doesn't necessarily translate to other fields. What helped my dad was pure luck (getting into a field right as it got hot, and finding a company that overpaid for his work, and he stayed there. Good luck finding that now. It just doesn't happen.

It’s all about HIIT. Marathons are overrated.

Stay in your Government job. It's secure and pays well. Coming from my dad. I didn't take the advice and went into consulting and then industry. Not only am I happier with my work, my TC is $100k above what I'd make as a maxed out GS-15 at only 6 YOE. I understand where my dad was coming from. His objective function looked different because he had a family to support. I was (am?) young so the idea of a boring but stable job just didn't appeal to me at all.

likefunny

D2 I did the same pension calculation assuming a 4% after inflation annual rate of return using the same money I would otherwise be putting into the Gov pension system. Even assuming no salary growth beyond the max for the GS limit, the pension just doesn't make sense anymore with how much new Government employees have to pay in (>4% base pay).

Thoughts - my kid got selected in a gifted program and it’s 1.5 hour drive from our house. We also have a baby who goes to daycare near our house( 15 mins ). Is it worth to send my preschooler to the gifted program ? It’s only for 6 months and after that my baby would go to daycare near the preschool itself. I am just not sure whether a 1.5 commute in morning and evening is worth the school for 2’kids to go through and will reduce our family time everyday.
