Got a few good ones... they’re all people with issues with themselves and they take it out on you. Every time it’s happened to me I’ve learned to see some of it coming and try to steer around it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

First project with a client who was very nice to me, we were hallway talking about getting his new hires trained and I was walking him though what I would train them. All of a sudden blew up, backed me into the corner of a cubicle and proceeded to tell me that “ya know, we don’t have the training budget like your big company has” it came outta left field and I was absolutely shocked 😂 told the partner and she backed him into his office and said if you speak like that to my people again we are all gone from this project and not coming back. We were about 80% of his staffing.

Had a MEAN SM who could not get this project going. Data we were asking for was PII and basically we were never going to get it. We started the project and spent 3 mos making DAILY adjustments to our project plan which continued to never resolve. The SM was so pissed the entire time they would talk down about another SM who was our technical cloud lead and scream at people constantly for “touching their face” or hair/fidgeting/etc. SM had this absurd short/trendy haircut that theyd flip around CONSTANTLY all day but we *were not* allowed to do the same.

Another client at a huge Fortune 500 who *did not* like consultants and had the best time dangling my responsiveness/deliverables/etc as if it’s not fast enough or good enough I do have the partners number. Ended up telling him go for it on calling the partner, I’d find another client quickly bc I’m good at my job. He loved the balls I had and stopped aggressively coming at me. Spent 18 mos with that client and he gave me a hug when I left 😂

Worked with this old guy from a third party consultant who was brought in to engineer data into AWS - he had no idea about AWS and told me he was a partner at Deloitte 🧐. He spent weeks reading about AWS and telling me what to do/not understanding the process we had In place and interrupting before I could finish any explaination. He also wouldn’t actually do any work and he’d say “you can help me PLEASE” but I wasnt working for him. One meeting he interrupted and I said look I don’t have time to continue to explain this, please let me finish my thoughts before you interrupt. He absolutely BLEW UP, laughed in my face and said “wives always tell you to stop interrupting” he was rolled off the client and not welcome back.

funnylike

When I was at Deloitte I was on a project where the client wanted things done a certain way and was very specific with short bullet points. So I did the report out exactly that way - like 200 pages. My manager, a self-acclaimed writer, thought otherwise and they needed more detail. He told my senior manager that I had no idea what I was doing, constantly questioned my ability in the role (“do you even know about the basics of X?”) so that made me feel really good 🤨. The manager rewrote the entire thing. We presented to the client, hated it and wanted it the way they asked. The team decided I wasted their time, kicked me off and brought in a favorite lower level who finished the job. It was almost exactly what I did with a few wording changes. The client loved it. Praise and glory to the lower level, and the manager. The dream team. I had never felt so low or so pissed at the same time. My senior manager told me that maybe consulting isn’t for me as it’s not for everybody. To be more like (insert names of favorites) can be really tough, but they “get it” and I don’t.

Flash forward a few years to seeing this client at an event, and told I was their favorite person to work with and they were sorry and so disappointed I “had to leave the engagement for certain reasons”.

The things is - sure maybe consulting at a Big4 wasn’t for me. But having good relationships with people is. And I find that underestimated in the consulting world when I thought it was supposed to be about having good relationships.

You’ll find your silver lining - just because you don’t work in a way that these particular people want you to doesn’t mean you’re not a talented consultant. It means you’ve got some poor management who isn’t guiding you in the right way.

This is much appreciated 🙌 I’ve felt some low points similar to this.. questioned why I’m even devoting my passion and energy to be overlooked. Appreciate the silver lining

dbag left a private vmail....you could hear the spit fliyng as he was yelling.....definitely a one off but also a sign that such a dbag could exist at the firm. too much time invested now and the money is good. I would tell my younger self to move on to a new company.

You can still. I am after 10+ years. My life and sanity is more important than this.

Worst I was ever chewed out was by a manager on my project, and i was a senior associate. The guy was wrong and was trying to cover his butt. I stood my ground during the chew out, and left the confrontation with a grudge.

One year later I had his job and he was no longer with the firm.

It’s not the loud ones you should worry about... it’s the quiet ones....

Token military story: Had a superior officer tell me I was the worst commander he had ever worked with in his 20 years. He was later fired for calling the chaplain a pedophile on a hot mic on a country wide video call.

At my previous employer (one of the big firms in this bowl), I had a partner who went ape-shit over my deliverable.

In his defense, the drafts were not great.
In my defense, he was asking for drafts two weeks before it was due and nit picked every single sentence. Drove me nuts.

Finally, let at night, when the pressure was on, I gave him a satisfactory draft.

I found out later he has been an asshole to almost every underling who worked for him. I never want to see him again.

Recently, I had an exec who would read the first slide of every deck I showed and would go nuts over how much they hated it.

EVERY deck. And I saw them do the same to many different people. Won’t let anyone get through the first fucking slide before bitching about how awful it looks.

I joined the firm 5 years ago, and was assigned to the project by a senior partner with another SM. I was collaborating on a pretty important deliverable with a partner who liked where it was headed. The SM, I’m assuming saw him walk out, and came into the room immediately and in front of the team, asked “let’s see your deliverable”.

He proceeded to rip it all apart and told me to hand it to a junior staff member - who had zero experience. The poor resource was baffled and after 3 hours of a stand off he was like ok take it back and fix this shit

Same project, 2 weeks of miserable hell, weekend calls and getting screamed at in person and over the phone, in front of the team - junior and senior members, I had enough.

One of the days we were in a conference room with 7 people, and he bursted into the room and started to rip on another junior member. I couldn’t tolerate it....I got up and told him to f%#^ off and that I didn’t care if he fired me, this was no way to communicate to someone who was trying to help.

That was our big day. Since then, we’ve worked together almost consistently on every project, he calmed down 99% - with his eventual bursts of flame - but nothing that can’t be managed.

I had the president of a prior company yell at me for about 30 minutes and call me a "F'ing Idiot that I should have never hired" back around 2005 for wanting to buy a HA colocated server setup for an Exchange cluster (this was before cloud based email services were really a thing). He requested it because the building power went out for a day and he couldn't get his email.

Fair enough, and I priced it out at about $17k worth of software licenses and equipment and colo costs of $300 per month. I had projections for equipment depreciation and maintenance costs built in and everything. My time was already a sunk cost maintaining it.

When I presented it, he then ranted because IT was not a "core competency" of the company and that we should outsource it instead of buying it. We ended up outsourcing it to a hosted Exchange provider to the tune of $36k a year for about 50 mailboxes.

Financial solvency was apparently not one of his "core competencies", because he bailed as the company was going bankrupt after I left.

likefunnyupliftinghelpful

Didn't have to hire an FTE, please read the post. I was the IT Manager that maintained all the servers, and had the bandwidth to manage a 50 person Exchange server without outside help.

This was a small business that didn't really have the cash flow to afford his choices, and they got in trouble with the IG due to accounting "irregularities".

I’ve had a partner just stare at me for a good two minutes before

Have a few ones, starting with something out of other planet:
- present to Board of a client (a small listed family co, leader in their category). Mapped their brand portfolio on a BCG matrix. The CMO lady stands up, shouts - “none of my brand is dog! How dare you!” and storms out of the room

Then I worked with a Director who used to chew out people on a weekly basis. The worst part was that he had legitimate points, yet he made you feel so shit about not seeing them before, that >5 people quit the firm at first occasion. Few examples of feedback:
- this is completely unacceptable
- I hate to micromanage yet you make me do it to you now
- you’re not prepared for this conversation. Call me/reschedule when you are
- keep hammering for 30 mins how you’re wasting his time
- spend an hour discussing wording of titles of the first 3 slides and berating an idiot who wrote them. When reminded that it was him (e.g. a day before) he used to stare blankly at you and slowly say it is your deck and you’re responsibility for every word in it - are you now conceding your responsibility to him?

My manager at pwc came for me when i used to work there a couple years back. He chewed me out on a deliverable (powerpoint) - I typically didnt feel slighted or usually take it personally when he got unhinged - this person was known among the A/SAs for having a temperment, being holier than thou and a bit of a workaholic who didnt respect the work/life balance of his team. After dealing with this blow up mentality a couple times , i guess it reaching a breaking point and day I was feeling a bit over his schtick.

I ended up muttering to his face “Now I see what your wife had had to put up with”. The context is he had just gone through a nasty divorce. He was steaming, walked out of the client room, and came back ten minutes later unaffected and the group finished the edits.

I ended up having to have a “pow wow” about team dynamics with him and the director the next day - ie he brought this to the director. I didnt hold my tongue in regards to how I felt or how the team was feeling beat down from the toxicity - i was able to stay calm, cool and collected here as well. Nothing really ever came of the meeting. I had good performance snapshots from my director and I made it know to my leadership that while I was game for any type of project or engagement, I wouldn’t work with that manager again under any circumstances.

Did I cross a line bringing his personal life into the equation?- almost definitely - I realize that, but I was just trying to go for the throat and knock him down a peg.
