What’s your best billing day while wfh/quarantined?

These numbers are higher than I would’ve thought - given how many trainings and updates and other ways to fill the time my firm has come up with to keep people engaged, I’d inferred that most people’s hours are way down. Maybe there’s a bias in who’s choosing to respond though...

like

There's probably that and some are probably inflating too because they're insecure and conflate billable hours with self-worth

SYDNEY, Australia (Corporate/M&A) (BigLaw) We’re still pretty busy (Financial Services & Tech). Even as a Law Graduate, doing average 6-7hrs per day. As for highest billable day WFH, 10hours (due diligence contract reviews—who would’ve figured).

I'm calling bs on the majority of these posts. We're on a lockdown. 3 million Americans lost their jobs in one week. The stock market is in free fall. If you're billing the same amount i hate to break it to you but the clients probably aren't paying!

likefunny

As a litigator, my work has remained steady. Although I’m not in court I am still completing discovery, preparing substantive motions, updating clients, and finding strategies that I may have been too busy to see before. I do worry that things will slow down. But, for now, I am doing the work that is available and moving cases forward like my clients want me to.

like

I have 0 billable today.

like

That's always the case with billing pressure. Try to lean on the excuse that you're having trouble adjusting to the WFH environment if you're questioned

Our firm told us we’re required to bill between 6-8 hours while working from home. Most days I’ve been billed between 6.1-6.5. Makes me pretty nervous that I’ll be the first to get booted since they were so specific about our requirements.

likesmart

You also have a responsibility to ask for work if you are low. If you have done that and still no hours to bill that is a different story.

likesmart

13, averaging 9. Life sciences are ... not slow right now

likesmart

Also in life sciences and can confirm. Highest day since WFH started is 14.9 and I’m averaging over 10 🥴

like

Our firm has monthly billing requirements of 190 hours and they are tracked by the Managing Partners daily now. Nothing has changed as far as the billing requirement goes... We have a ton of work to go around as we are an extremely busy litigation practice. However, I do think there should be some slack given because these are extremely stressful times for everyone and I don’t feel that’s been a factor considered enough among law firms. Maybe a little understanding rather than the top threatening to fire attorneys and/or take away their bonuses might instill a little less stress and anxiety...😕 That being said, I’ve been bored and have a plethora of work so I typically bill 10-13 hours a weekday and a couple hours on the weekend. But I can’t imagine how hard it is for people with young children at home and it’s a shame there’s not a lot of understanding in that regard at a lot of firms, mine included. I just have my puppy.

Oof.

17.5 high. 2.9 low (a sunday where I thought I had covid). 235 so far this month. Healthcare ain't slow.

likesmart

Huuuuuh?! 17.5?!

like

7.5 and 3.8 so far.

Chillables! Best work for quarantine IMO.

like

16 - but slowing down a bit

like

Best has been 8.5 and worst has been 3.6 (which I then made up for over the weekend)

Averaging 50-60 a week

The firm has been busier than before corona pandemic, which is surprising for the industries we serve. The question is whether the clients will pay the bills by the end of this nightmare.

8 on the dot twice, but felt like I worked 16. Most days 5-6, tough with a toddler and a packed house.

like

Im billing 50/week. These plaintiff attorneys are keeping me busy responding to poorly drafted video depo notices

likefunny

5.. small firm but still worried about client’s needs and ability to pay... so many are reduced hours/out of work and with courts reducing schedules, it’s not looking good.

like

Best billing day is 15.5; hitting 240 this month. Transactions are still going strong (surprisingly) and capital market work has been picking up.

like

Do any of you have small kids? The lack of childcare has completely wrecked my month.

like

A42: I feel you. My only solace is I was a good biller before, so they’ll see that WFH and being a daycare was the reason I’m getting like 4-6 hours a day. That’s working at night while kid is sleeping too.

like

9.5 and 2.25. Averaging 7-8, but I seem to be much busier than most.

like

Averaging 8-9. Today was just over 11 with some video depo prep and conference calls with experts. Gotta keep billin’ like a villain.

I don’t belong in my job. I didn’t mind it when I joined in January and was interacting but as we’ve been work from home longer, the less motivation I have. I don’t enjoy the work but I’ve gotten unlucky with my teams too, and can’t remember the last time my manager praised me without a critique. Maybe I’m just bad at my job. At this point I just am doing the bare minimum to not get fired. What do I do? Should I look for a job that I actually would enjoy doing or stick it out?

For those of you who spent a long time in big law (at least 10 years but more along the lines of 15+), when did you know it was time to do something else (maybe in the law, maybe not)? I don’t know if it’s wfh or just the work now, but I’m finding myself getting amazingly frustrated at things that barely bothered me before. I had an argument with opposing counsel last week and was seeing red for hours after that, and little things seem to bother me much much more than they would have before

I have a pending I-485 and my case was recently “ready to be scheduled for an interview” about 2 weeks ago. I haven’t traveled to my home country for 3 years and was looking forward to going this December … I have a valid H1b that expires in 2023 and would need to get it stamped. There are appts available in my home country. However I don’t have AP (did not apply due to valid H1b).
