I stop buying things, after I realize it costs money to physically store things. Then I start to think if I have less things, I need less space and can spend less money on space.

like

A mindset and execution that has worked wonders for me: delay a non-essential substantial purchase, as much as you can. You set a threshold, say $100, and tell yourself that you will revisit the want in a week.

Often times, the want will subside or go away completely.

Automated investing and increasing the % with each raise.

Recall that prices you see aren't the "real" prices. It's after tax! A $15 drink is really $20 of pre-tax salary. This might be pinching pennies but thinking about this might help cut down in some ways.

I basically flip it around. Determine how much you want to save, then carve that out. Whatever is left over is what you can spend guilt free.

Same, this is the best way I think. Make a model that hits your FIRE # with a 90-95% chance or more by an age you want, then back into how much you need to save each year to do so. The rest is yours (and the governments’...)

$X auto deposit to brokerage account each paycheck/month. Save first then spend second.

Increase that $X every several months or every year based on pay increases.

like

Agree with this. I have $X going to a brokerage account to mutual funds, $Y going to an account that covers must have expenses (automatic rent payments, utilities, etc.) - I calculated so that 1/2 of these expenses are pulled from each paycheck - And $Z going to a third account which is the only one I actually see and spend against. This is where my fun money, travel, etc. Come from

I try to think about how much value something adds to my life (kind of thinking of it like an investment lol). For example, I value spending money on good produce and high quality health supplements, since I see that as an investment in myself.

These tips are all great, but I'll throw out another one - surrounding yourself with the right people!

When you start to make good money, you can start attracting two types of people - the "Keeping up with the Joneses" types, and the "You're rich, you should be paying for it" types. These people will suck you dry if you allow them.

I'm very thankful to have friends and family that are happy for my success, but also inspire me to live the comfortable yet modest lifestyle that I want without asking for anything in return. Surrounding yourself with winners like that will be the best long term financial decision you can make!

Well put. Underrated

1) Avoid lifestyle creep. Live within your means and be reasonable

2) Eat 90% of meals at home or through free meals (I.e. if your company caters - and bring the Tupperware!)

3) Slickdeals.com (if there's something you know you want to buy down the road, be patience and wait on a sale or for the item to appear on Slickdeals

4) Develop and track a budget. Compare actual expenses against budget monthly to make sure you're in line. Use personal capital app

5) Always resell your tablets/phones online after buying a new one. Don't do trade-ins unless it's a great deal. Use swappa.com to resell

6) Think about how much you'll actually use something before buying before making the purchase and consider if it eventually just be more clutter to have to get rid of

7) Prioritize pre gaming instead of throwing away money on drinks and cocktails

8) Take advantage of credit card bonus rewards and make efficient use of them. Use autopay on all credit cards.

I made it a challenge to only buy 3 articles of clothing this year to really be intentional with what I’m buying and if I need it.

This is very interesting. I might steal it.

@SC1 I am a distance runner who goes through a few pairs of shoes a year. I consider it a cost of a hobby instead of clothing. I dont think my shoes will count towards my 3 pieces of clothing. Id rather spend $$$ on shoes than Physical therapy when I mess up my knees

Homebuyers: how did you decide when to put in an offer? We’ve been looking around for about 2-3 weeks (in the East Bay, FWIW). A house we were interested in dropped the listing price by $27K on Friday and then today, our agent texted me saying that the selling agent was “begging for contracts”. We really like the house but there are a few downsides. With the housing market seemingly slowing down, we’re also afraid of buying at the peak of the market. Looking for any wisdom or advice. TIA!

Anyone here investing in Indian stock market? Is it a good idea to transfer dollars back home and investing in BSE/NSE.

Is there an easy/efficient way to figure out how much you've contributed to vs earned in your Roth accounts? I started contributing >20 years ago to my employer's Roth 401k and have rolled it over to a Roth IRA and moved it between multiple custodians, e.g. Fidelity, Vanguard, UBS, Personal Capital, etc. It is unclear to me how much I contributed vs how much I earned by investing it.

The purpose of doing this is I want to use $10K of it, but want to prove that the $10K is from my contribution.

Just got engaged 😊😊. Need some advice. We both have two homes already.
1. Is it always better to get a third home ?
2. If yes, is better to rent out or sell the other two homes? Both homes mortgages are $1250 & $1450 and 1500 sqft & 2200 sqft respectively. Both homes are 3 bedrooms.
3. If we are getting a third home what price range is recommended?

We are based in Houston and HHI is going to be $380,000(including bonus & rsu) & $300,000 base. We are 27F & 30 M and no kids yet.
