Mock interviews help me. I typically do one before any interview with my SO so that I can practice in a comfortable environment.
And here’s my more methodical approach to preparing for interviews: I write out my answers to common interview questions and say them out loud to myself enough times where I can rift from the scripted response and it feels more authentic. Write out something for “tell me about yourself”, strengths, weaknesses, why this company/job. And then prepare 4-5 scenarios using the STAR method that apply to common interview questions (talk about a time you faced a conflict, made a difficult decision, solved a problem, demonstrated leadership, etc.)
I know it sounds very unnatural but this strategy has prepared me for literally 90% of questions I’ve been asked in interviews. And usually interviewers softball these questions first so then later in the interview, I gain enough confidence to answer anything that throws me off script lol.
I love that. Ty for the comment.
I love helping people with interview prep. A couple top tips I have:
1.) get your “tell me about yourself” nailed down. Every interview will start with them asking you an introduction - practice it in advance and cover your experience, your skills, and why those skills are good for the role you’re interviewing for. Practicing out loud helps a lot in being comfortable for the interview.
2.) Prep IMPACT stories in advance (in star format). Look up the acronyms, but it makes it so much easier to respond to a question like “tell me about a time you worked with difficult stakeholders” if you already have 3 stories that apply well thought out. Again, practicing out loud helps a lot with being comfortable during the interview.
3.) Look up the companies values and show how you fit. YMMV but some companies like Amazon take this very seriously.
And just remember; they already know you’re qualified - that’s how you got the interview. Now they want to see if you can communicate well and are someone they could get along with. This one probably doesn’t help much in your case, but really - try to have fun with it; it goes a long way 🙂
Good luck with the job hunt!
