Well most of the time I tell people the school I work at and they have never heard of it. The joys of working at an alternative school.
Pro
I find the perception of mine (also alternative ed) depends on whether the individual has had family members attend (positive) or not (negative). People who've seen the impact of what we do and heard first hand stories know we are doing something valuable. People who haven't just see us as where the "bad kids" go.
Our community revolves around the school. We are a small, rural community. It really feels good seeing support signs at most local businesses.
For the most part, my community really likes the school I work at. They support community events and the students and parents patronize local businesses so the relationship is two fold

Football team is awesome so the school is awesome 😉

Does the phrase "Let's build the plane while we fly it' ring a bell? 🤦♀️
Not very good unfortunately. My school has the lowest SES, highest diversity, high ELL population and our test scores are lower than the more affluent parts of the district. So the general opinion is to look down on our school 🥲
That’s sad but true in many cases. I worked at an elementary with the same demographics you mentioned for 14 years but 5-10 miles down the road where I work now with the opposite demographics have a supportive community. All within the same district 😔
I think our community is supportive of our school district.
The school and the community are closely intertwined. The community supports our school to a huge extent.
Our community is quite supportive of our school. We are a rural school and school district, so many community activities are school related.
Rising Star
I feel like our community is relatively proud and supportive of our school. We usually have pretty high parent and business participation and support when we host community involvement events.
Rural school and district over here. The school is pretty much the only game in town, so any community event is often in the gym, cafeteria, or auditorium at the high school or middle school. Sometimes school is seen as more of a social part of the community rather than an educational entity.
Mostly favorable.
We have 1500 in a wait list. Open enrollment public charter.
If people know of it (one of the schools outside the city limits in our corporation) they seem to have high regards for it! It has a good reputation and is generally thought to be where all the experienced teachers get to go and enjoy teaching until retirement. This is not necessarily true anymore with a rising number of young teachers(myself included) as well as some behavioral issues that seem to keep popping up.
But overall, good!
