What’s your company’s maternity policy?

As a Canadian it’s not all rosy up here. Most places have mat leave but not all and women can for sure get fired or mommy-tracked when they have kids. Depends on your company more than your citizenship.

You kick-ass person you!, I’m very happy to hear you beat cancer ❤️ Now, if what you’re saying is that in your specific situation you may have been better off in the US (and the data reflects that) then I believe you. I can’t even begin to imagine how tough it is to have gone through what you’ve gone through, but it doesn’t change the prime directive: make all of us better, not just the lucky few. Currently, the data suggests that overall, Canadians are doing better bc of the cost of and access to healthcare. Not trying to change your mind either, but happy you’re still with us nonetheless! 🙂

16 weeks with parental +medical paid; you can add PTO as well or take time off. You also don’t have to do everything consecutively if you want to space the parental out. We also have a separate policy for foster care, if you do that instead of adoption/birthing. Due in December and planning on taking 5ish sweet months off :) very happy here with our benefits and my team is very supportive.

Recovering Canadian here. My father in Canada has an unidentified issue in his lung. 18 months to get in to a specialist. They’ve done x-ray and ultrasound. 🙄 Would’ve had an MRI within a week here in the US. Canada’s “wonderful” and “free” socialist health care killed my grandmother, killed my grandfather, killed my uncle, killed my neighbor’s uncle, trying to kill my father, nearly killed (but maimed) my wife and also nearly killed my son. Crippled and hobbled my sister in law, messed up my niece’s life by failing to identify an easily identified and corrected issue for years. Socialism KILLS.

Apology accepted; think nothing of it. So, I get the bit about affordability or whatever. Here’s my take, based on personal experience. I could barely keep afloat financially in Canada, with the crazy taxes. Much better in USA. My experience. I remember some years back here in the USA, myself unemployed and limited financial means, living with family. My son gets sick and there’s a meningitis scare based on symptoms. He got care; ended up being no biggie. Cost me nothing and I am forever grateful. If someone is sick and needs care and asks for care in the USA then by law a hospital has to care for them. We’re not mean and uncaring people, just go about it in a different way from our northern cousins.

So sad 😞 your wife deserves better. That’s not the way to treat your employees.

16 weeks leave and 3 weeks vacation on top that... max 19 weeks you can take anytime in the 1st year of the baby being born. Both mom and dad qualify.

SM2 - short term disability applies to birthing parent. 6 weeks for vaginal delivery and 8 weeks for csection

Yeah and do you know how much consultants get paid in Canada?

like

Yeah median family income is in the 50k range and I bet most get close to zero parental leave. Consulting is usually top 10% of America in income and benefits IMO

My wife got paid 2.5 yrs after our first child. Beat this if you can.

Okay well this seems like a system ripe for abuse lol Not sure I’d be a fan of subsidizing that nonsense, but that’s dope for you guys

Deloitte gives you 6 months maternity and 4 months paternity.

Wow! That’s awful 😞

12 weeks plus 4 for maternity. 12 weeks for paternity. Pretty good overall.

Based in NL. 16 weeks maternity leave. On top of that 6 weeks paid time off and unlimited sick days

6 months

16wks between medical + parental leave as the birthing parent… plus I’m planning to tack on a month of PTO to the end (USA)

16 weeks. I took vacation after for 4 and then took 2 unpaid. It was both glorious to spend time with my newborn child and also not nearly enough to actually cover the amount of time it takes to parent a child (e.g. sleep training, feeding, ok mostly sleep training, etc.)

6 months!

This reminds me of when I work for a large company with a big presence in Sweden. At any one time we had 1/3 of the workforce on leave. It was nearly impossible to get my projects done people always coming and going for their birthing persons leave.

Yes we tend to plan projects around summer holidays :) or absence of people in general

Two weeks for the mom, nothing for the dad.

That's terrible. I wish there was something we could all collectively do to change that. It doesn't make sense to me why these benefits are different when you USDC is also based out of the U.S offices.

Typical Bernie decontextualized statement intended to make us all hate capitalism and America. Canada is still deeply locked down and struggling to disseminate covid vaccines to its citizens. It’s not all roses up there.

I am due to take 2 weeks parental leave sometime in the next month and have an offer lined up. Is it better to tell the new place I would prefer to push my start date to take my leave and join two weeks after (accounting for 2 weeks of notice when I get back)? Would that be burning a bridge with current firm (taking leave and giving notice as soon as I am back)? I want to avoid losing 2 weeks of salary during that time if I can.
