I've been working in high schools for 40+ years, and I still love young people. My earliest students are grandparents now, and many still stay in touch! It's been a wonderful life.
Last night I went through the Wendy's drive thru and four of my former students were working. They all came to the window, chatted excitedly with me, upgraded my frosty, and told me how much they love me! That was a pretty awesome moment as a teacher!
Yes! I had the privilege of attending a wedding several years ago of two former students. I had them in class the same year, but they didn't know each other yet. I also had the best man and maid of honor! We all took a photo together! (Years before that, that groom and best man came back to middle school to hand deliver my invitation to their graduation parties!) These and other examples remind me of why I do this, when the going gets tough.

Each day is different. It’s not like going to a boring cubicle each day. Or making sales calls.
For years and years, watching students grow and mature. Now, to be honest, weekends and vacation days
That "aha" moment! When kids finally figure something out and they are proud of it, I am in heaven!
Summer, and all the art supplies in my room. Where else am I gonna get to fire my own personal ceramics for free, use my mega high-res scanner and large format printer for free?? 😎
Some are “more educated”, and some may not be. It depends on the sector/industry and job role/objective.
Being able to make a difference in people’s lives is rewarding! It feels great at the end of their accomplishments. We also take turns and play a role in investing in the future of the trajectory we want to govern our country.
Showing a child love who might not be getting it at home or just knowing I am giving them skills that will help them have a better future.
Having meaningful, powerful, godly conversations with students who desperately need the truth.
Amen🙏🏻
Being able to have a restful weekend or vacation knowing I positively impacted kids' lives. Especially NOW. We're all beyond exhausted!
Watching students get excited about books and reading. I'm the Librarian so I get to see them go from kindergarten to 5th grade. I like be watching them grow up
Impacting lives...and if there is a teacher who is not in it for at least that reason...well...
Even after thirty-five years, it's never the same from day-to-day.
Getting sweet notes from those kids that really need love and feel like you’re giving it to them! I have a few that come see me during their free time because they want to talk. It’s a great feeling!
Love those relaxed check-ins. It makes the day so much brighter!!
Obviously it is impacting lives, although lately I am not as effective as I would like to be due to my declining health after cancer and other diagnoses. With that said, it would be a lie if we did not admit we appreciate the time off i.e. holidays and weekends. Coming from a corporate world before going into education nearly 10 years ago having holidays and weekends off are truly a blessing. Not that we as teachers work less than those in the corporate setting, it is just we put in more hours during the active months so it is sorta offset when we do have time off. Ultimately the incentive is helping kids become life long learners and make better decisions in life. Lots of challenges today with how depraved society has become as a negative influence. yes, I said what I said.
I’m sorry to hear about your diagnoses and hope they’re being managed well. I agree with everything you said about the best parts of the teaching profession.

I love that every day is different, there’s never a dull moment, and kids really do say the darn feat things! Also, those vacations are great!
