Anyone have experience with fat washing whiskey?
I never shake an old fashioned and I never dilute it. I have a couple go to recipes, but I don’t always measure. Here they are:
STANDARD OLD FASHIONED
2-3oz bourbon of choice (my go to for a regular OF is Jefferson)
2tsp simple syrup
3 dashes of angostura
3 dashes of orange bitters
Stir gently, never shake
Add an ice ball. Garnish with a Luxardo cherry and orange peel.
MAPLE OLD FASHIONED
2-3oz Knob Creek Maple Bourbon
2tsp bourbon barrel aged maple syrup (I have a friend with a sugar shack who makes this)
3 dashes orange bitters
3 dashes angostura bitters
Stir, never shake.
Add ice ball, luxardo cherry, and orange peel. Sometimes this one I’ll leave the orange bitters and peel out and add something else like a vanilla bean.
Lol. I initially read “old fashioned recipe” to mean my grandmother’s banana bread recipe that I love. Guess I’ll keep it a secret for now.
Give the people what they want!!
1 Tsp club soda
1 Tsp sugar
3 dashes angostura
2 dashes orange bitters
Muddle
Ice
2oz rye
Mix
Garnish with a Maraschino cherry
Put into a shaker of ice:
3 ounces Evan Williams (yes it’s a great old fashioned bourbon)
A few jiggers angostura bitters
1/2 ounce simple syrup
Shake and strain into a glass of ice with an orange peel twist that’s been rubbed around the rim of the glass, and a Luxardo cherry
Perfect. Luxardo’s are the best cherry in any cocktail!
For me:
2oz whiskey (something you actually like the taste of - I like Rare Breed Rye, BT, and High West products)
0.25 oz (winter) -0.5 oz (summer) simple syrup (50/50 water and Demerara sugar on the stove, heat until dissolved, put in Mason jar and store in fridge)
8 drops of Angostura bitters
One dash of Fee Brothers orange bitters
Combine simple syrup and bitters in empty glass, short stir, add whiskey, stir, lower in large ice cube or ball, stir until temp is where you want it.
Add one Luxardo cherry and a little sauce if giving to the wife or using sub-par bourbon.
