Currently trying to decide between 2 offers. One is a technical role at Target, another is a consulting role at West Monroe. TGT offers better comp, and possibly better WLB, but WM likely has higher wage growth that could pass TGT in a couple years. Typical PTO is a bank of hours which accrue during the year but you can start taking at Day 1 but cannot exceed what you would accrue by year end, and can carry 3-5 days, if any remain, into Q1 of the next year.
Ouch.
I left my old company, which offered 10 PTO days (15 after a whole year) for a new job making 2-2.5x income and unltd PTO.
Definitely recommend figuring out your PTO prior to taking the job as it may be hard to backtrack on that after accepting.

Congrats on the new role! Despite the PTO situation I like everything else about my new job a lot better. I’m much happier here. But I had no idea PTO could be negotiated, so it’s good to know for the future
That is something I would’ve negotiated upfront before taking the job. I would not go backwards on vacation time. Not necessarily unlimited but at least three weeks.

12 days seems really low, I’d expect at least 3 weeks (15 days). Do they have a lot of paid holidays and give a lot of sick time? Maybe they try to balance it like that
No, it seems like the minimum federal holidays. They fully pay for healthcare though which is pretty great. Sick time is like, 3 days I believe

Unlimited PTO is a scam. My last job had that, and I didn’t get my unused pto days when I left.
I’ve always heard that about unlimited PTO, but at my last role we were strongly encouraged to take advantage of it by higher ups (including CTO) and most people used it pretty liberally
that’s how it works, just like your base pay u start with 0 and collect over time
unlimited is a relatively recent thing but it comes with quotes and caveats

It differs a lot between countries to my knowledge but I have 30 days of PTO yearly and I live in Sweden. I think around 25 is the standard here. And you can only save 5 from one year to the next so you have to take it or you get the days in cash after each year.

That’s pretty low. Are you working for a tech retailer or something? Just wondering, since the companies in tech with the worst benefits are usually something like Wayfair or other retailers where they offer the same benefits as they do for other, lower skilled positions.

I wouldn't imagine the gigantic tech companies wanting to give SWEs lots of PTO considering they're the ones building, maintaining, and supporting these million/billion dollar products (even if they did, would have so many strings attached).
In tech, you'll find the typical amount of PTO as 2-3 weeks with some amount of carryover. Most startups (and maybe a few medium-sized companies) give the unlimited PTO perk. Unfortunately, the huge tech companies probably wouldn't try out things like unlimited PTO, 4-day work weeks, etc because it would have to become standardized throughout the departments which might lead to unfairness and possible risk.
Most people at my company get 3 weeks vacation plus 8 holidays plus maybe 5 or 8 sick days plus 1 floating personal day.. so that's 24 days plus bunch of sick days
People who are fresh from college get the same except they only get 2 weeks vacation
I see similar numbers from other companies
So yes I think only 12 is not enough
Six weeks. Two extra days per kid, if they are below... 6, I think? Another two days per kid whenever they get sick.
Universal health care and all the sick leave you need - however, if it's months, you and the employer must work with social services on a plan for how and when you can return.
Of course, moving to Denmark is a bit of a change.
At coinbase, pto is unlimited, and they also have one “recharge week” every 3 months, where the whole company has to take off
We have 10 days vacation (accrued) and 5 sick days. 8 holidays a year
Current company gives 20 days per year, 1.7 days accrued per month, plus a floating holiday and other paid holidays as well as some thank you days given as free PTO. Increases to 25 days after 5 years. Has felt like just enough earned without really ever having a 0 balance. But to be fair this could also be dependent on your company’s work-life balance culture.
12 does seem low. I’d weigh the benefits after a year and reassess if the growth and earnings outweigh the PTO accrual rate
I got 15 days at the start and they go to 25 after like idk 10 years (I doubt I'll be here in 10 though)
Is the position remote? That would be the caveat that would possibly make it worth it. Unlimited PTO isn’t necessarily the greatest of benefits, flexibility in how and where you can work is.
Yeah, it’s fully remote, at this point I wouldn’t even consider a job that wasn’t haha. Too used to it
I wouldn't have accepted the offer with that low of PTO - I now have unlimited and use 4-6 weeks/yr. I wouldn't accept less than 4.
Is that the prorated amount since you started mid year? I just started a new position and am only getting ~14 days. Then, starting January, I get the full amount and floating holidays.
My last role was 3 weeks but my boss was an a**hole & would deny my PTO
I have unlimited in my new role & my current boss will not deny anytime unless if we have an absolute deadline we must meet
I think it really depends on your current role & it’s culture, 2 weeks does seem low but I’d rather have 2 weeks where my boss will not deny my PTO than 5 weeks & my boss will deny every PTO request.
