What’s your recommendation if my new 401k does not accept pension rollover? I think the only 2 roll over options left are traditional/Roth IRA, right? If I first roll over the pension to traditional IRA, and then immediately roll over the traditional IRA to my new 401k, will I still trigger the pro rata rule when I do backdoor Roth in the future? I have never contributed to a traditional IRA or done backdoor Roth so far.

Does your 401k allow incoming funds from a rollover traditional IRA? Perhaps it’s possible to two-step: roll to trad IRA, then roll to trad 401k as incoming funds. Then, you could still delay paying taxes.

Yeah I think it does. Gonna call them this week to make sure. Thank you!

You have zero basis. It’s not even a prorata rule question - if you convert to Roth the entire balance will be ordinary income.
