54, $6.3M investments, $1M property, self-insured. Plan to work 5-10 years (still saving) and retire on burn rate of $160K/yr on $10M-ish. Looked into trusts, but they are mostly about control I don’t care about when I’m dead. I asked my wife to sign a prenup and if the kids fritter away the fortune then that’s their journey.
A smart person once said, to forecast what you’ll do in retirement, look at what you do with your free time now. While it’s not perfect because we can’t usually fit in exotic travel with a M-F work week, the basic point is that if you have never even looked into non profit board membership or researched worthy volunteer opportunities, the likelihood that you’ll suddenly start to be passionate about that the day after you retire is pretty slim.
