I'm freelance, so my income varies (and an in-flux economy doesn't help), but it's usually around $110k-$125k. My rent's $3.3k/mo., but I'm able to write off half my rent and utilities for a home office. My advice? Take on some freelance work for the win-win of extra income to help with a higher rent payment and being able to write a portion of said rent/utilities (plus other business expenses) off.
When you write things off, you’re taking that amount and subtracting it from the amount you’re supposed to pay taxes on. So if you make 100k and you write off $20k worth of expenses, you’re only liable for taxes on 80k is income. If you’ve been paying on your actual salary all year, you’d get a refund. If you’re paying at the end of the year you would just pay less than you would have.
Before I moved out this past September, I was paying 3k for my portion of the rent (roommate made a fraction of what I did so I paid about twice his rent). Rent was 4510 a month for a 2 bed 2 bath right on the water in LIC. My total comp was ~190k (160k base, 15% bonus and some nominal RSUs). Now I'm married and at ~210k total comp, and my wife is at around 70k total comp. We'll likely move into a Murray Hill place at around 4200 per month for a 1 bed
She's a medical resident. Currently her first year of residency is in PA but the next 3 will be at NYU in Manhattan. After she completes that we'll be at 500k-600k total comp between us. But for now we're at close to 300k
105k and 2300/month. No roommates and no regrets.
How much do you get to save a month? We have the same salary & im debating
Wow! Reading everyone’s salary makes me embarrassed to say mine! 🥴🥴
@SC1 - I never said those other things don’t need to happen. Point was keep trying and you’ll get somewhere. Doesn’t have to where I’m at. And like @Acoustic1 said life was more free at $80K, so money isn’t end all be all, it’s just what this post is about.

Around $600k for the two of us. $3k.

I can’t share a 1br with someone and would probably need at least a 3br so there’s no savings potential there for me 🥲
$250K TC and $1k rent with one roomate ($2k total)
About 25 mins from midtown in lic

Lets not standardize covid deals…
155K, 3200 apartment (including cable, utilities) 😒 it’s a nice one bedroom and I live alone. I do feel like I’m paying a lot for my salary but I love my place 🤷🏻♀️
What area?
240k for $1800 1 bedroom. I’m a little surprised people on this app have way higher salary average compared to an average New Yorker.

😂 I work at Amazon as a principal product manager and have some investment properties that I rent out. Used to work in the big 4 as a tech consultant. I know creative directors and c suite get paid well in advertising but it’s not known to be a high paying industry otherwise (I mean like over $200k total comp for just the mid level managers). I don’t mean that negatively because the lower pay is offset by a much more fun job than consultants etc have.

$140k and $3400/month. No roommates
That's so much in rent.
I make 150k and pay $3,850 in the UWS. I have two kids from a previous relationship so needed a two bedrooms. I have no idea how we make it work now that I write this :) well I have a tiny side gig for 15K/year

Freelance, on the UWS?! I play $3400 for a 1BR in a mid luxury building and that’s impressive according to all my friends looking now 😅
160k and 1600 with 1 roommate (3200 total)
$365k (base) ~$500k total and $3500/month. I do have two kids in daycare that run me another $4500/month though.

Perhaps more likely is that PwC1 is in a two-income household and that’s their combined income.
$150k base, $400k TC (50% cash, 50% RSU), $3.8k on the Highline. Expensive but my commute is 5min
Friend of mine just transferred to NYC looking for a sales job in Tech (worked for blue chip CPG in EU), so if you are open to giving referrals please let me know ;)
120k … 1480 queens
I used to do 2k rent on 90k salary.
I definitely lived above my means and barely saved money due to my choices.
Now living at home and making 215k thanks to the pandemic and changing to M&A from traditional tax.
M&A tax. 🤓
240k tc, 1br duplex, private backyard, no roommate, 3200 rent

187k; $2950. No roommates.
101k, 1700 for a one bedroom in LIC. Older building. Rent stabilized.
125k base, 3k rent, 1bdr to myself. Never been happier.
Hell’s Kitchen. Rent is now 4k+ for similar units.
130K - $2k on a 1 bed. "Trying to justify", makes me think you can't really afford that much. My advice: don't stretch yourself on rent
85k, 3750 split with a roommate. 1700sq feet with elevator and laundry in midtown manhattan. I've been painfully trying to find the love of my life so I can finally split a one bedroom and start saving $$ :')
Thank you for the post. As a fellow designer, I got excited when I read the original post but then found no relevant/relatable responses as I scrolled through until yours.
80k, 2700 split with my SO (we paid proportionally based on our salaries) until he bought a place and now I just cover up to 1400 in operating cost while he pays for the mortgage + property tax
