Two days ago I was super excited to accept my offer to join a biglaw firm this summer as a 2L summer associate. I was ecstatic! Now that I've had time to digest it I'm absolutely terrified. I realized that I know nothing about law, how to write a memo, how to use Westlaw or Quicklaw or anything that a summer student should know. I'm petrified that I'll show up this summer make an idiot of myself and not get hired back. Any advice on what I can do to prepare between now and May?

I recently made the move (remote for now, but will be in person eventually) and I’m trying to figure out my role and how I fit in. What do you wish you had known when you were making that transition? I’ve been a staff attorney at a state-level appellate court for 11 years now. I draft opinions all day long, every day. It’s been an ideal job in a lot of ways (flexible hours when my kids were young, etc), but I’m starting to feel the itch to do something different (and to make more $!). Suggestions on practice areas that would find my skill set valuable? Suggestions on how to find out what market rate would be for salary for an 13-year attorney that has only worked within the court system?

i’ve been approached about a position with a much larger agency. reputation seems good but is it crazy to think about a move in this climate? i’m relatively happy in my position except for the salary and some of the older school mentality issues that arise sometimes. would love advice.

What do you do to relax? To turn off the brain when not at work - to unwind? I have always enjoyed artsy projects even where I am not amazing at it, and over the pandemic, I found I really enjoy alcohol ink-derived art and wood / resin projects. My 13-year old has a woodworking business that he promotes at vendor fairs (cutting boards, etc.), so I even sell some of my things here and there when he’s exhibiting. It’s fun and relaxing.

I’ve been struggling with this, in part because it happened to me in a previous role & I’m trying to leave it behind. I was managing a diverse team which had two white males on it. I recall during my first few wks, whenever I stated something in a meeting 1 of the white males would re-explain what I just said really rapidly, almost in a manic sort of way.The other white male would get really sassy (not how else to describe this) with me at times.
