For it. As a white male, I have so many innate privileges in life (wealthy family background, white sounding name, great schools, etc.) that people of a different background will never have the same opportunities as me. If you grew up poor and black, no way you could get to where I am on your own. We should help these people.
So you will be ok with not getting in your dream school/dream job not because of your grade/resume and ability, but because the school/company needs to hire more minority to meet the quota set by the government? How is this different from the Soviet planned economy? And should we also implement affirmative action on the NBA as well because as a 5'9 male, no way could I get into the NBA.
A lot of people on here need history lessons. I'll skip the lesson and give an analogy. Imagine a poker game. One white player, one black player. They play for hours and the whole time, the white player keeps winning because he knows the black player's cards (the game is rigged). Then suddenly, as the game is about to end because the black player is almost out of money, the white player says "I'm sorry, I haven't been playing fair. I'm not giving the money back, but I promise I won't cheat anymore, lets keep playing". Now the game may be fair going forward, but the black player is at a severe disadvantage. Even though the game is now fair, the odds of him winning is low because of what happened when it wasn't fair. The goal of affirmative action is to try to even those odds. I'm not arguing for it (it has a lot of unintended consequences, typical when the government tries to fix things, they usually create different problems), but I understand why it exists. America is in a much better place now (insert Trump joke here), but this country's dark history has generational impact that most just don't understand.
Answer to the first question is Yes (and FYI, the government doesn't require companies to hire minorities). Answer to the second and third: such stupid questions they're not worthy of a response, which would take several paragraphs just to explain the illogical comparison.
Well by definition it is racist, but because it suppresses whites no one says anything. Obviously racism exists, but as there is no way to prove cases of racism, I think Affirmative Action further implements the idea that minorities may not get a job or get into school because of their race, meanwhile they just arent qualified. So instead of improving themselves, they continue to play the victim and think the white man is trying to keep them down.
It's reverse discrimination. I have a 85% agreement on political stand point with Clinton but affirmative action is something I can't agree.
If you go back and look at your family tree, my ancestors were slaves and yours were slave masters. Their economic situation couldn't have been more stark. Due to inheritance and the fact that parents want their kids to succeed, black people will always behind socioeconomically when getting the best education goes to the high bidder aka whoever can pay for k-12 private school, SAT tutors, kumon. However I do think affirmative action should be based on economics rather than race
I'm Asian so I always get fucked over
(And in case you're curious, yes, I'm a white guy)
CS, my answer is that not only do certain minorities as individuals benefit from the boost, but the entire pool of that minority group benefits from having many of its members climb the ladder. Many black and Hispanic leaders in all professions in the United States benefited from affirmative action, and now that they've climbed the ladder they're in a position to help other minorities climb the ladder, too.
Good initiative, unachieved goals - i'm asian
I'm Asian, went to an elite college (H/W/P) and yet I have to work harder than my white colleagues for my superiors to see us as "equals"
Agreed
Affirmative action is not a quota. It is the idea that there is value in a perspective and background that is different from the majority and therefore a diverse population is beneficial to all. It's a harder sell in business but certainly in higher ed, which is all about building a community and challenging preconceived notions, there is a lot of a person's value not captured by grades and test scores.
It's not that people play the victim, it's more that some people were not board on third base and for that reason could use a little boost.
"born"
Yea I know BofA , but tell me then how do we differentiate between those who truly need it to do those who are just trying to get by ? You cant. Tons of other groups of people (including whites) grow up in poverty and are constantly being overlooked, so where are there scholarships?
I agree that grades aren't the only thing schools should consider, but I don't agree race should be a factor
JPM2 nailed it precisely
Well said IB analyst1, I'm a big supporter of the financial aid system where the poor are granted money to complete their education. I even think that there's a lot more we can do to help the poor on that aspect. Basing it on race or gender simply doesn't make sense anymore in the 21st century.
