Dad bods still working?
Let’s get the job posting flowing! 😆
To use the word “cringey” and “tacky” seems a bit harsh.
To build trust and rapport, it doesn’t happen overnight, but I agree with Partner 1’s comments about sharing relevant news, competitive intelligence — being the go-to, trusted partner who provides the value add where the client says, “Where is X, we want to make sure they’re on the call!”
Hmm what did you say exactly? “You look well.” Or something more than that?
I tend to agree with your lead, unless you have a very close relationship with your client, you should never make comments on their appearance. You can build rapport by sharing relevant news, activities, and interests.
Understandable - you didn’t do anything with ill intention. You are simply learning and will know what to do next time. Don’t take it to heart, you got this!
Imagine if the barista at the coffee shop you went to commented on your appearance every day, you'd probably stop going there right? If instead the barista always had a quick personal story that was funny or insightful, I bet you'd feel like you know them better and would be more likely to share your own personal stories.
Client relationships are really not that different, keep chit chat focused on yourself so clients can open up when they want to. Usually I come to meetings with a question in mind and answer it myself first (eg does anyone have any plans for the weekend? I'm going to the beach with my dog!). Also first focus on delivering good work/results. In the above metaphor youd probably still not want to hear the barista's personal stories if they got your order wrong every day!
Thanks for this!
