What's your take on "fake/scam" award ads? I think they're fine as long as they solve a real business problem. Also a great way to do good work when you aren't blessed with a client like BK/Nike/...

If it’s solving a “real business problem” is it still fake/scam?

I think work created just for award shows, that doesnt help brands and takes time away from real projects, are killing the industry. Yeah, they’re cool, fun to work on and recruiters fall for them, but they’re damaging our reputation as an industry. If you want to do a cool print ad for page 27 of a small newspaper in Singapore just so you can post you won a lion on LinkedIn, you’re part of the reason clients don’t trust us.

There’s a difference between fake and proactive ideas. I prefer to not partake it either but what leaves a bad taste in most people’s mouths (and probably what give these ideas the bad rep they have today) is when someone, very obviously, tries to make up a problem to justify an idea you they have. Add that to the fact that it wasn’t even really a relevant problem to begin with. Not all problems in existence are worth tackling for a brand, at least at a current point in time. What makes it worse is when the idea/solution itself is clearly a one time thing that’s not made to be sustainable over long term. That has “made up crap to be submitted into awards” written all over it. There’s a very fine line and you either see it or you don’t.

CW 4 - shhhhhhhhhhh

Can you provide an example?

This right here is the problem.

If they’re fake, they didn’t actually solve anything. This stuff just feels like student work.

Should we call our agencies or keep it to ourselves?

Anything that’s submitted during a pandemic.

Think of GUT as an example. They're an agency based solely on wanting to win awards. Their business model is pretty much cherry-picking clients that can help them win awards in the shortest time possible.

I don’t know if this is true as I assume there is also work beyond what they send to Adweek. But if it is, I don’t get how it’s a complaint. I know a lot of creatives, myself included, who feel our everyday assignments don’t match the level of creativity we thought we were signing up for when we pursued the industry and that the brands we work on would benefit from approving ideas that are more creative.

Are the A Design Awards for real? The keep sending tons of emails and I always assume they're spam because they sound so small/sketchy.

My two cents, cheap simple stuff like Burning Stores or that KFC print one with the chicken wings as explosions aren’t a huge deal—at least they’re entertaining. It’s when they spend a buttload of money on something that is loosely tied to a cause so they can claim they “solved world hunger” or even just “taking a stance bla bla bla” with faked stats and results to inflate their own feeling of self-importance in this world when really they wasted their clients budget for industry recognition that has me rolling my eyes You can’t even trust the creative effectiveness lions anymore, a friend of mine worked at an agency that won one and told me how he was carefully instructed to skew the results and facts in the case study, basically to rob a real campaign that deserved it so their ECD could get his face on the cover of Adweek Also, you should rewrite your post here as 90% of what BK does is scampaigns. From unhappy meals to that hidden camera crap for women’s equality, it’s all a sham. They do a lot of cause-related stuff, but it’s nearly impossible to find how much money they’ve actually donated towards these causes, or what internal changes they’ve made within their company to support them (none), and they have never implemented any year-round programs to further supporting their “stance”
