What's your take on professional resume writers? Haven't needed to update the resume and professional profile in a number of years. Do you think it's worth paying someone to spiff up the resume, create a LinkedIn profile, key word optimization and cover letter? Working with Ladders and their offering, and it ranges from $100 for jr level resume writer, to over $300 for top writer and all the bells and whistles.

If you haven’t written a CV in a long long time why not. Otherwise I’m not sure about that.

Maybe for the cover letter. But do people still write cover letters?

If the job ad or company website portal for the job listing literally asks for a Cover Letter (at times including a drop-down box where you attach or copy/paste your Cover Letter), make one that is engagingly customized to that company & job ad.
That would show you as an applicant who:
1) can read job posting details,
2) can efficiently research who you're reaching out to & respond accordingly,
3) can follow instructions, and
4) can express oneself even outside of bullet points.
Also, there are companies that use ATS (applicant tracking systems) to scan for key words in any submissions (Cover Letters, Resumes, CVs, etc.) to recommend to their human screeners w/c application packages - among the many they may automatically get - should be scheduled immediate interviews for vs. application packages that do not have enough trigger key words relevant to the company & job posting.
That said, generally effective Resume Writers and Career Coaches could be worth the financial investment if you sense that you need a credible 3rd party sounding board & editor (professionals who you can be honest with & who have a track record of getting candidates placed in great fitting roles, because they in turn are diplomatically honest w/ their clients about what can work for their situations vs. just coming up w/ generic templates) for your application packages.
FYI, sometimes when slickly written Cover Letters, Resumes, and typed answers to online portal screener questions do not match your own tone, professional persona, etc., the interviewers will pick up on that and might prefer to go w/ someone who can write, think, & speak for themselves as best as one can if the job requires quick clever thinking + being independently articulate.
Hope these insights help as you prepare to expand your career horizons, OP!

I'm in North Carolina... and I resigned after eighteen years, with MONTHS of leave I'd accrued and never used. I am done. I'm just done. And bummed about all that leave...

Additional Posts in Tech Sales

I want to transition from SE to AE. What are the skills I’d need to build up to be ready? I’m not sure I’d be able to handle the paycut required to go into the BDR/SDR role and build up. I’m also doing an MBA. Any tips?
