30% raise sounds good to me!
I left JPM for HSBC banking and with it, a 40% pay bump. I think it’s completely worth it and as long as you can speak as to why you made the move, it won’t reflect negatively. It’s your career!
You will still have the MS on your resume…moving to different firm is for growth and professional development…and they pay you 30% more? I see only positive sides. Go for it! Good luck 👍🏻
I think it really depends. How many years of experience do you have? If you have a lot of YOE, then the firm name wouldn’t be as relevant (besides, you already have MS on your resume) and I would take the 30% pay increase that wouldn’t happen unless you take an external change. If less years on your resume and MS name is important to future opportunities - the yeah reconsider. However, I don’t agree that a move from MS to Normura would make you look “pushed out” - especially when you’re not a high level exec. Guarantee no hiring manager thinks that if they see you go from one firm to another - and if that was a deciding point to hire you or not - most likely you don’t want to be working for people like that. Just my 2 cents
If you will do more valuable works that will make you grow, then yes. If the work is pretty same, then no. Nomura has the 2nd tier & foreign culture element still there, I believe. It will be a downgrading if you stay there long depending on your career goal.
Grab the money, I put very little value on employer name “prestige”
What field?
I’m also at a top firm and experience brand name discount. But at the same time, it has given me insane interview opportunities. In the past 1.5 month job search, I got 20 interview processes. It probably wouldn’t have happened if I had not been at my current firm. So something to think about.
In the exec search world the percentage off GS base comps in comparison to other firms is known as ‘the Goldman haircut’.
I know someone who left MS for Nomura for way more money. He’s still there after about six years. Says it’s a PITA but it’s the longest he’s stayed in one place.
If it’s more money — go!!
Take the money and don’t burn bridges.
This, always be professional and courteous when leaving.
for what role?
I’m probably too familiar w product control/ipv/valuations. Try to see where you have more room for growth, where you can have upward mobility, which people you like working with more... if you like your current role, ask for a raise? If you don’t like your current role, then why not try GS? I know a lot of ppl have left both GS and nomura. 30% raise sounds sweet too. Don’t worry too much about the bank name I’d say.
