When a background check is conducted and you are on garden leave will the background check just let your future employers you are employed or will they know you are on garden leave?

Depends on the type of background check being run

Generally speaking, most checks will only find current and previous employment, because your employment “status” is employed, and HIPAA prevents further release of details

As a rule of thumb you really don’t want an employer to find out anything material they don’t know. But usually gardening leave is when you’re between two jobs, so have you accepted a new job already and are applying for a third one?

While you’re on garden leave (or notice period if your company doesn’t make you work it), you are technically still employed by your first employer. Assuming you’re going to another similar industry/finance shop, your new employer will expect you to be on garden leave as it’s fairly standard legal practise in the industry. The background check is just to make sure you were employed when you said you were but won’t distinguish garden leave. Though in theory you really shouldn’t quit your job until you’ve signed and passed all the checks at your new employer so you wouldn’t start garden leave until after the background check is complete anyway……

Has anyone tried having their boss break down salary increases into components or a logic? My boutique firm gave me a total 10% increase in base over two years, calling it a “promotion bump”. When I inquired about inflation vs performance/responsibility, they said that’s the reason it’s 10%. In effect, ~3% effective increase over two years. Am I right to be a little frustrated?

I think I am going to have a nervous breakdown sometime soon. My closest friends and collegues are getting laid off; I am safe for now but it seems am counting days. I was supposed to move to another country but stuck due to the pandemic. Living alone far from family and can't meet friends. And to too this all I can't help but feel saddled by this 'world sadness'.. the number of Covid deaths, the racial issues, the grim economic future. Anyone out there feeling like this? How are you coping?

Do you always negotiate salary after being offered a job, even if you don’t have a competing offer? Can you use inflation as a reason? Can you say x amount will make you really excited or do you have to back up what you’re asking for with reasons? Is it true that most companies expect you to negotiate?

People of the airport.. Which airport has the best food options/ restaurant's?

Does anyone else work with a boss and co-workers that are international? Having a hard time with a new set up at work as I joined a team that mostly works out of a different country. I’m finding that the work I do has to be fixed a lot due to the time differences where in a normal situation they would not need to be redone (this is due to only having 2 hours a day to communicate). I’m just not sure that this is sustainable long term. Should I start looking for another job?
