When a senior associate tells you “I wouldn’t bill more than X on this assignment” and then you purposely bill more than X because who are you?? Who can relate

Huh? A lot of times when senior associates say that it’s for a rough guideline so you don’t get super off track. We might tell the associate if there have been conversations with the client that we would only bill X hours, but usually we’ll just write it off without telling you, so I’m not sure the point of purposely billing more hours just to stick it to the senior associate, especially because it’s the partners that will review your hours and wonder why it’s taking you so many hours to draft a memo/research/draft a motion, etc.


The associate won’t be looking at my bills either so I didn’t stick it to him. He won’t know. It’s just the principle when someone arbitrarily tells you what to do you don’t do it.

I... what? This is such a bizarre reaction to a common instruction. When I advise a junior on how much time I’m expecting a task to take, it’s usually because I don’t want them off in the weeds. I usually ask them to check in when they’re getting close to that point if they feel like they’re not done or finding what I need.


I’ve been in biglaw for all of six months so who am I to say, but I think this information is helpful and I make a point of asking for this info whenever possible. For my first assignment (when I didn’t get an estimate) I spent like 10 hours going way into the weeds and drafting a very detailed memo-like email. Turns out the partner just wanted like 2 paragraphs and had to write off some of my time.

Also if I get an estimate of, say 4 hours to do X, and I’ve spent 2.5 and I’m barely a third of the way through, it’s a good sign for me to check in with my supervisor and course-correct.


Keep doing that. This is the exact reason senior associates give you time estimates! You’ll also learn more and become more efficient! You sound like a great associate and one that will keep getting assignments 😊


If I’m giving junior associates that instruction, it’s because their overbilling was brought to my attention by the partner (who probably wrote off all of the junior’s time), and I was asked to try and guide the junior along. So ... cool story, I guess?

I have our first vacation coming up since adopting a puppy and I’m feeling really nervous and sad. We found a wonderful couple who boards dogs and she will be with humans and other dogs 24/7, so I don’t think she will be lonely but I keep thinking what if she thinks we abandoned her? Did not get an offer from Morgan Lewis last week. I went to a seminar today where the partner I interviews was speaking (he is the main partner of the group and he has like a 5 person team). I admit, as a fifth year big law associate it has taken me way too long to find a good memory devise for whether Supra or infra means “see above” or “see below.” But I found it and now I’ll share it with my other Latin-vocabulary-challenged fishies.

I’m not surprised but wow things are so firm and group specific. My firm and my group are not scheduling any calls on Monday and pushed back on clients so that work begins Tuesday. My friend’s firm is treating it as work day if you’re not black “because it’s not a real holiday”. Appalled.


How are recruiters paid?

Does the attorney have to stay for X months for them to get paid? Or is their pay secured? Reason I ask is because I lateraled using a recruiter recently (more than half a year, less than a full year ago), but am not content with the new firm and I'm wondering if they have a conflicting incentive for me to stay or if there's no such conflict with reaching out to them and saying this new firm isn't the right fit.


Any suggestions for successfully lateraling from a boutique/midsize to big law as a second or third year in entertainment (lit or transactional), particularly in LA?

I didn’t attend law school in LA (or T15) but otherwise have a transferable, well rounded resume with ample experience (IMO). Workload and Covid has nearly eliminated all networking events. Are these opportunities really limited to associates from the same handful of schools?
