When and how did you decide to live on your own? I live in HCOL city and want to save money, but I don’t know if it’s worth my sanity. I’ve never enjoyed living with friends and feel that I always compromise quite a bit as a result

NYC. Many years ago, when I still had roommates, I was vacuuming. The vacuum got clogged. I went to unclog it. I found someone else’s used condom. That was the last straw and it spurred me to find my own place - never regretted it once!!

I feel like those of us who enjoy living alone just intuitively know. Like, I can’t really explain why I prefer living alone, but have always known that it’s my nature and better suited for me. I’ve never pictured myself having a roommate and after living alone for so many years now I honestly wouldn’t even consider it. I pay around 28% of my income to rent and utilities (med. COL) but my preference for living alone far outweighs my annoyance at my rent bill so I’d rather cut expenses elsewhere 🤷🏼‍♀️ At the end of the day, we work so we can better afford to live the way we want, part of that includes living situation.

You are answering your own question if you are trying to get an opinion!! Move out of HCOL city or shell out more to live on your own!!

When my mom send me out of the country and tells me to work and going to school at the same time.

It is definitely expensive to live by yourself, so for few months I spent most of my income towards rent but I find it not worth it, so I'm moving in with another person (and be very picky about it, don't want them to not wash dishes or be dirty).

Same here. I have an incredible apartment deal, but I am so over roommates. However, moving to my own place will dramatically increase my rent. Not sure what’s worth more, the peace of mind of more financial security and flexibility, or my sanity. I can’t decide.

I save a decent amount right now, and if I leave my investments as is, living alone would cost approximately 50-60% of my take home income. I could reduce my saving for a bit and then recalibrate when I get a raise or move jobs, but still, I’d be pinching my pennies. The problem is that I’m in my late 30s, and still having roommates at this stage drives me nuts and makes me feel like such an underachiever.

I loved living on my own. I was afraid of it at first and worried that I would be lonely, but it was fantastic. I am a bit of a homebody though. Make sure you get a place that you love, fill the space with things that make you happy and comfortable. Also, I had a cat so I was never really alone. Having an animal has always helped me.

I never lived with Roomate’s. I wanted control over my entire domain. Although I probably should have done a Roomate or two.

I lived alone in NYC for 8 years. Didn’t save a dime but it was an amazing 8 years! I always said I’d get a roommate if I could find a 2br/2bath and never found one that was more affordable than living alone

like

Do it while you can. I grew up with 4 sisters, then had roommates from college up until my girlfriend (now wife) moved in with me. So I’ve never actually experienced living alone or having my own space. Not that I’m complaining... my roommates were mostly all close friends with similar lifestyles and living habits, I just think it would have been nice to have my own space for at least some time.

like

The only reason I am living with someone is that I don’t feel lonely and I would feel safe when there’s someone else in the apartment. But after this quarantine, I am moving out. I want to have my own space and be free

I started living alone when I went to law school. I had horrible roommate experiences in undergrad and decided never again. Definitely could have saved money during law school if I had lived with other people but it was worth it 😌

Same for me but with business school - definitely worth the money

I also started off in a high COL city (Boston), but lucked out with a 2 bd 2 ba and an awesome roommate (friend from school). Think that helped both of us save while keeping our sanity and personal space! I’m going to live alone in business school though because I don’t think I can find as good of a roommate/living situation I did then.

I am 31. I always lived in dorms with roommates until I finished my college. After that, I have had roommates all through while working (8 long years). I have had a mix of roommates.. some good, some bad & some worse. I am done with this now, currently with family but planning to have my own place going forward. It will be a big increase in monthly costs but I think it will be worth it.

I did masters in between where I had to live with 3 other roommates due to financial constraints. This is the worst phase of my life and always regretted it. I have to deal with very unhygienic, lazy & ppl who talk bad abt u behind the scene for asking them to be a little more clean & keep the house organised. I wish I never lived with my then roommates.

As a relatively new investor (and young - 23), I’m struggling to determine when to sell positions to potentially enter other positions with more room for growth.

I’ve bought solid companies at a low basis and have watched them grow (+30% minimum)...but also would like enter new opportunities that also have large rooms for growth.

For ex: JPM @92 or AAPL @45 (post split)

Skills - Program Management - Digital

Which will be good for long term, wlb, and work per say.

I've lost my father to COVID very early and very suddenly.

He was only 55, a brilliant man - ex CEO, entrepreneur, business man & a loving, doting and proud father. He had so many life accomplishments and so much more he wanted to achieve. As an only child, my parents have been my everything. I love and adore them so much. I feel a heavy weight of responsibility, sadness and helplessness without his guiding hand and mentorship.

I just found out that after a mutual family agreement not to, my little brother is dropping his kid off at my mom’s for overnights. My mom has diabetes, high blood pressure and COPD. We miss her but have been staying away to protect her. Now my mom says she doesn’t care about the virus anymore. I have no relationship with my brother because he’s an abusive narcissist-but should I just respect my mom’s wishes and let me kids visit-knowing she has accepted this virus to be her fate?
