When asking and being given the budgeted salary range for a specific role, how accurate is the range typically? Say they stated 120-140k? Would this most likely be on the lower end, or is it the actual budget for the role and there's not much room to give above? If offered the role, what would I expect and/or counter?

I’ve been actively applying and interviewing lately, and what I’ve seen is the range is usually what the budget is. In your case, the $140k is probably the max. I just don’t know whether that’s $140k base or $140k total compensation (i.e. including bonuses).
The job market is SUPER tight and competitive right now, so I wouldn’t risk trying to negotiate above $140k. Maybe if they offer less than $140k, you can try to negotiate to the $140k (and you may need to get creative like ask for a lower salary and a signing bonus or something).

Awesome, thanks for the insight!

The range quoted is the actual budget. It is based on skills and experience. Sometimes there’s no room to negotiate. Sometimes I’ll rearrange my budget and hiring needs to accept a counter offer from a top candidate.

There is almost nowhere to find reliable bonus information on Canadian firms. I’ve heard of year end bonuses ranging from 10-50% this year (not including Covid bonuses). Let’s start a thread posting year of call, rough billable hours worked and bonus as a percent of salary.

5 year call. 1850 hours. 10%.

Clawback clause in current contract: been in role for over 2 yrs, it was an internal move that required relocation. Relocation was approved shortly after (over 2 yrs ago) but covid meant the actual move and start of my contract with new subsidiary was delayed, I was paid by the previous subsidiary meanwhile. I got small relocation package. Would internal move be subject to a buy-out/clawback clause if I leave now and if yes, is it time in role or time under new contract? Any experience? Thanks!
