When calculating savings percentage do you calculate how much you are saving after tax or before tax? I'm struggling with if 401k and HSA taken out pretax adds to my savings percentage or is not included

I use pre-tax to make the calcs easier. Just keep the measure consistent so you can see trends over time.

Pretax and include tax as an expense. Makes you aware of your real biggest expense.

I use a combo - the denominator is post tax earnings + retirement contributions. To calculate my savings rate I do my post tax savings + retirement contributions over that denominator
Example (per month):
Post tax earnings: $5000
401k cont: $1600
HSA cont: $260
Post tax savings: $500
Savings rate = (500+260+1600) / (5000+1600+260) = 34%

Hey!

A few months ago I made a post about salary negotiations during my perf cycle.

I received a lot of wonderful advice from so many people. I was also able to 'research' and look at some other related posts talking about the same topic. All that to say, is because of your advice, I had the resources to negotiate my salary and as a result also received a promotion.

Just wanted to say thank you all, and to remember to always advocate for yourself!

Why should I invest in my 401K before a taxable brokerage account?
