When did working Saturdays become a mandatory thing? I used to work like 4 Saturday's a year and now I get a million emails from people who are working every Saturday.

Because EY blows at scheduling. According to my friend at EY there’s a shit ton of unassigned time going around EY and people are getting fucked working late when people are sitting around and going home at 5. Not to say scheduling at KPMG is great either, but we don’t have unassigned time at least not at my office

like

Ey5 must be part of HR. HR at Ey sucks at scheduling

like

I agree that the scheduling is an issue. You will have staff who can't prepare basic workpapers because they have been so under until idea their whole career they have missed a lot of learning. The really good people get killed and the crap don't get much work

like

I work on Saturdays, but it's stuff that doesn't take a ton of effort and only happens if I've got nothing better to do. I don't force my team to work and don't expect responses to my emails until Monday, a point which is frequently communicated.

like

@EY5 I agree with EY7, you probably are a part of HR. Your job isn’t that hard, nothing close to the actual revenue generating jobs of the firm like audit, tax and advisory and being able to leave at 5pm. I’ve never been in HR but get real, it can’t be that hard

You are in the client service business bro, 24/7 availability is the expectation.

I wish some of that unassigned EY time would make its way to my project.

More than 08 years working on international tax, worked as many hours as needed during the week. Worked on a weekend less than 05 times on my entire career.

In my view working on weekends is something avoidable in 99,9% of the cases. A good professional also needs a good break.

What office?

likesmart

Coming into the office on Saturday is a waste, nothing gets done. Everyone catches up for the first 30 minutes (audit) because they haven’t seen anyone since last Saturday. Work for 2 hours until lunch and then bs until 2pm.

like

I haven’t had a single day off since sometime in January (work every Saturday and Sunday)

like

I share your pain. We have all the good workers working 60 and the crap people working 30. It’s less logical in tax to have people under utilized when everyone is in the same office sitting in the same area all day and you can leverage people who are clearly visibly more free instead of making the same people work till 11-1 every night

like

@EY5 I get how important HR is to a company, but don’t pretend like your job is the most difficult in the world where you need to be rocket scientist to perform it

like

I'll put in my time Monday through Friday , FYI I charged 70 hours this week, but weekends are mine.

Tax question - I make about $200k and get half of my income from a W-2 and another half from being an independent contractor. Because, I’m subject to pay both FICA and SECA taxes. Do my social security taxes get capped on amounts paid above the ~$140k threshold across both my W-2 and 1099 incomes or am I out of luck and have to pay more than that since only about 100k of my income is FICA and the other 100K is SECA (which is subject to ~12% overall including the ER portion)?

Hi tax 🐠,

I have a question for those who prep individual tax returns. My parents claim my grandfather as a dependent on their tax return and due to their low income, receive PTC for the premiums they pay on his insurance (not eligible for medicare). However, would it be advantageous to have him file for his own tax return (he stays with my parents and doesn't have his own proof of residency via bills). If so, can he get PTC if his income is 0?
