We were packed and ready 4 weeks before my due date just in case. We packed all kinds of stuff but the things I appreciated the most were an iPad with downloaded shows to watch during labor (I had an epidural), a comfy warm robe to wear after Baby is born, cell phone chargers, and pillows since I didn’t like the hospital ones. I did bring a couple things to help with breast feeding like nipple cream, but really the hospital will probably provide all that stuff for you. You may want snacks to eat if your labor ends at midnight and the hospital cafeteria isn’t open.
Oh yes, and Baby outfits in multiple sizes! You never know if your baby will be small or huge, so bring a newborn outfit and a 3 month outfit just in case.
Warm socks with gripper bottoms (hospital socks are not soft), my own soft jersey nightgown with button open front for breastfeeding, Medela lanolin for breastfeeding (worked better than other brands), my own toiletries, extra ponytail holders, snacks, a couple different pacifier options for baby, phone charger, and make sure spouse/partner packs their own stuff like pj pants, extra sweatshirt, chapstick, toothbrush, etc. + 2 outfits for baby.
Yeah, the sleeping options for your spouse will probably be pretty terrible, like one pillow and a flimsy blanket. Might keep a pillow and blanket for him in the car just in case.
Ugh, this is reminding me of the hospital stay when I gave birth. The staff was wonderful and greatly facilities, but no one sleeps well with nurses and staff coming in at all hours for various things, bad food (cafeteria), and of course just not being at home in your own space.
I ended up taking my work travel bag and just adding a nightgown and baby stuff but otherwise the bare bones are the same. FWIW it was 80% packed for a few weeks but you have plenty of time in early labor to finish it up, and it’s actually a good distraction. Plus at least in my case husband couldn’t stay overnight so he shuttled back and forth and brought things for later days. I would add a decent looking outfit (think 7 months fat) and some makeup for pictures - we took some pre discharge (hospital had a roving photographer come in for a 10 minute shoot) and I while we all look tired and terrible, they are some of my favorites :)
Snacks!
I realized that I did not use anything from the bag I packed except for the phone charger, baby’s go-home outfit and my clothes to go home.
👆🏾this!
I packed my hair dryer & shampoo & eyeliner - used it the day i left the hospital. Had so much time while waiting to check out and it felt SO GOOD to feel as fresh as possible. This is coming from someone who blow drier her hair very rarely.
I used nothing that I packed except a pair of pjs and snacks :)
