Why 500? How do you set that number and how do you keep a "startup" vibe with a larger number of employees?

I think it's more about size of company and culture which probably changes around 500 employees. That or a 1B valuation.
Right after you've left out of frustration
When they stop hiring idiots who do nothing but break things down, that's when it's more creative. And vice versa, when startups start hiring process managers and people who do nothing but nag on people, there goes the innovation.
