When does everyone think this spell of shittiness in the tech sector will end? Everyone around me (inc me ) are struggling in jobs they hate/company culture that sucks or layoffs and the jobs prospects are equally as bad.

What is your job? I am a Solutions Architect and Software Engineer… not a day goes by when I don’t have recruiters banging down my door.

Have you considered a career in accounting? There’s a lot of benefits in working in public accounting and we almost never do lay offs.

Lol I can’t tell if this is a joke or not

I think it's been around since the dawn of the tech sector. It really depends on leadership, the people you work with, and the values the company believes in. I've worked in my fare share of shitty companies and there's nothing you can do to change some of them. In others, i've gone out of my way to lead by example and made a change to the company culture, but, it takes a lot of extra effort that a lot of people don't want to make. For some of the jobs that I held, I sucked it up and endured until the layoffs came because I believed in the work I was doing and the people that it affected. Other times I've given notice because the toxicity was affecting my mental health.

I think the best best is to talk to your manager if you have a good relationship and state that you are unhappy. Offer ideas that would make your time at work more enjoyable and work hard at creating that safe space in the team you're in. As a people leader myself, I make an honest effort to do whatever I can to make my reports happy because, at the end of the day, if my reports aren't happy, they aren't producing good work and that makes everyone unhappy.

Unfortunately, the pandemic has sucked a lot of empathy from people and co-workers have forgotten how to be human. Until we're back to normal, it's not going to change much but it's up to you to try :)

P1 - can partners be fired? I was one of the #metoo posts, a partner cornered me trying to get into my hotel room (both hands on both sides of me), luckily I was able to get out of the situation. This partner is still at the firm, haven't said anything. No physical evidence (no texts, emails, etc. so HR/legal wouldn't do anything). What do we do, P1, when this happens?

Sooo we just had a town hall with the managing partner/CEO and I don't know if it was intentional, but the background was his MASSIVE, palatial country/vacation house. Am I wrong for feeling that this he was a bit out of touch? Especially since many of us associates are still scrambling for work and we're under constant fear of being laid off.

Hi Isabel! I find that during the week I can stick to a healthy diet, but as soon as I'm home I revert back to unhealthy eating. Since I only get to spend weekends with my family, I find myself going out to eat, cooking more fun meals that can be unhealthy, or even just having more dessert than typical. Any tips on how to maintain the self control throughout the weekend?

Started in a scale-up company about 2 months ago. Took over three teams where the tech leads were filling in as POs. I was expecting the product department to be more structured in order for me to grow and learn, but so far it feels like every other week I am asked to implement a new process change. Between that, trying to learn about the product as it's very complex and deliver sprints to tight legacy timelines I feel overwhelmed and thinking of quitting for my sanity. Suggestions?
