When doing anything finance related, I overlook basic details and my numbers end up being a mess. Is there a course I can take or a book I can read to get better at my agency financial literacy?

I don’t have a recommendation, unfortunately, I but wanted to give you a virtual high five for your self-awareness and initiative!

What do you mean by overlook basic details? What is specifically confusing you or throwing you off? Here to help 💕

What kind of numbers? Top line revenue, margins, burn or forecasts? The first three are probably improved upon by taking business math or accounting classes. Whereas the latter is a mix of art and science, but also probably online learning somewhere. If I find any I’ll post here.

My understanding is thin, which leads to the issue. My last agency did that too, so I’m starting late.

Also reach out to your finance team member before you present. Walk them through the numbers so they are airtight.

My favorite “teach myself finance” book is HBR’s How Finance Works by Mihir Desai. For more in depth things I like Udemy or Coursera :) Hope that helps!

Thank you! That’s a great tip, I ordered the book.

AMA used to have an agency financial management course. Failing that, seek out a mentor. Most senior account folks really want to help develop skills of talent on the team.

Thank you! I’ll look into that!

In my second busy season of PA (2 years ago), auditing a specialty finance company that we all quickly came to realize stunk to high hell. We ended up issuing an adverse opinion over a disagreement with the client to book an approx. 100MM write down adjustment to deferred revenue. We walked away with the thought that we had just scratched the surface of their corruption. Fast forward 2 years and low and behold they’re under a 1.2B dollar investigation by the SEC and their CEO is in prison.

Hi, Consulting Moms! I need advice - I am leaving industry to return to consulting. I have offers from KPMG and Deloitte, and we are looking to start a family ASAP (we have been actively trying and I have a feeling it would be just my luck to start a new job and find out I’m pregnant). Would love your insight around personal experience with hours per week, work-life balance, culture, etc. Offers are same level/role/scope (Change Management / Transformation / Human Capital) and same salary. Is anyone familiar with ESOPs? Background: I worked at a company from July 2017-May 2015; they instituted a ESOP in late 2007. I need to confirm this part: payout begins 5 years after you leave (for me, that would have been May 2020). I am looking to go back as a part-time contractor (20 hours a week) from Sept 1-December 17, 2021. Will this impact my ESOP payout if I go back as a temp/contractor?

In July I missed my promo to SM. A woman has been preferred even if she was underqualified (my MD's words), as at Accenture we have quotas for women. I'm interviewing with Deloitte, they told me I'll help building the practice. In the meantime I was assured by my MD that in December I'll get the promo. I don't really care changing company, even if I've built a network, I don't think I need to wait if I can. Your thoughts?

My husband told me that he feels parenting our 2 yr old is a burden. He’s actually a great parent and loves our son but hates all the hard work that goes with it (wake ups / getting ready for daycare / sick days / tantrums). Neither of us wants to take a step back in our career to care more time for our son, and we don’t want the other person to either. We’re considering an Au pair, but I’m mourning the fact that we, and especially he, aren’t parents that love parenting. Anyone in the same boat?
