When I ask about a diversity when the virtual room is 80% White or South Asian - yes, lets get after it. When I ask about diversity when the virtual room is 100% East Asian (but me - immigrant POC) - crickets. Anyone else encountering this barrier time and again when trying to promote diversity?

I understand this frustration. My thinking is that East Asians haven't realized that in some spheres and by some measures they are a majority group. They do not yet feel any responsibility for diversity. I am a POC and happened to be the only non Chinese in one small office I worked in pre-consulting. It was more isolating than any other space I've ever been in! You can imagine what it felt like when they'd completely ignore me and run meetings in Mandarin, stopping periodically to translate. This wasn't a Chinese company, btw. Or when they chose WeChat to communicate. I asked how come no one was filling me in on important points, and they said it was because I wasn't on the app. But I had never heard of it and noone had told me they were chatting there. When I downloaded it to not be left out, they started another group. This time they said they needed another group to message in Mandarin. They didn't mean harm, but were completely clueless about being inclusive.

BCG1, Yes, they were Chinese- born and educated, all came to the US for grad school. I genuinely struggle with whether is was ignorance/insensitivity or slight racism. I have to admit after this experience I appreciate White people for at least trying. Re: ABCs: I have had very mixed experiences. Some of my very closest friends are American-born Asians.

Could you please clarify why you drew this distinction between white/south Asians vs East Asians? The point was unclear to me. It’s almost like you’re trying to say that East Asians don’t care about diversity! That couldn’t possibly be it right

I am trying to have an honest conversation to figure this that I can’t realistically have in any other venue. When I try to learn (even via private conversation), I get the same story over and over again that you allude to. It pretty much comes down to it is none of your business, you aren’t in our community, so don’t even pretend you can try to understand. I am not trying to shame any group. I did point out the other communities to avoid this going off the rails about America’s racial history or colonialism - that a lot of these D&I threads become. I want to learn about a community that I work so regularly with, but the only one I encounter turns its back on me when I discuss D&I. You are right. It is not about “all members”, but the community at large from my lived experience.

I recently got married and started talking to my sister in law more often. She addresses me as “Bro” EVERY SINGLE TIME. She knows I identify as female. I absolutely hate because it’s a sign of deeply ingrained patriarchy and I also find it disrespectful. I never address anyone as bro, dude, man etc because I honestly find it very disrespectful. My agency puts on a big show about their diversity/inclusions/women’s equality efforts but for the most part its bullshit. The c-suite drinks their own koolaid and don’t even realize it’s all fake.

I accepted a new job, they said PTO was “generous.” I find out it’s 19 days a year of PTO (which includes sick days). I have two young children and we like to vacation 1-2x a year (no more than a few days away each time). Am I crazy that this is pretty limited time off? 8 of the normal holidays off during the year (working the week between Christmas and NYE). Thoughts? I dont know if lack of PTO is a good reason to back out, is it?
