When I ask any questions about Amazon, I get the same answer for all my questions i.e. "Don't get Pip'ed" who work at Amazon. If Amazon is that bad then why are these people still working there? Is Amazon that bad? Am I making a wrong decision to join Amazon

Have worked in multiple companies( (industry, consulting, tech) wanted to share here bit from experience and what I have seen- every company has some form of PIP or counseling out process. It is a matter of how rigorously it is followed and if some people abuse it or not. Regarding WLB some of it is driven by company culture but a lot of it is driven by manager and the team. Amazon is a customer obsessed company, outcome focused. When outcomes take priority, something no has to give. I have seen on apps like Blind people working in Amazon while also dismissing it as the worst company while also boasting a TC of 300K with 5 years of experience. I just chuckle and wonder if they wanted extra tickets for Disney on top of 300k and Avocado toasts for snacks as well. Bottom line is, if someone is good, aware of self worth and able to function in a team ( managing upward, downward and sideways), they would not only survive in Amazon but also thrive and succeed.

Helpful reply IBM1 Why did you put 'aware of self-worth' there at the end? Like in general, sure we need to recognise our worth, but why is it that you need to be aware of self worth to succeed at Amazon? Any specific reason or did you just mean in life we need to be aware of self worth to succeed?

If you’re capable and competent, you’ll be fine. Expect 6 month ramp to get adjusted to the environment and technology, and get comfortable being uncomfortable.

100%. Coming from consulting, Amazon is chill. If you came from an industry job, you’d be like, “wtf is happening, I hate it”. Consulting is the perfect bootcamp to prepare for and succeed at Amazon.

Dude Anazon literally will overpay you for your non-tech experience while giving you the platform to learn and exposure that most other firms can’t. You think this is meant to be easy? Even if you can make it work for two years, you’re going to jump the next curve on your exit. It’s a no brainer.

I was reading somewhere that the managers have a hiring/firing quota and a lot of people end up on PIPs

I actually straight asked this my manager and she said its ludicrous. We are struggling to grow as it is, doesn’t make sense to put in firing quotas.

It’s not bad, it’s just like any employer with its pros and cons, but there is a very vocal minority that skews the perception.

Depends on your baseline. If you are part of a “up or out” consulting firm, amazon is probably on par or slightly better. Versus other tech, this is pretty brutal. But as others said good to have on resume

Can the Amazon folks please share the difference in upper ceilings in compensation for Technical and Non Technical Program Manager roles? Also, are non technical pm's able to move to technical pm roles if they up-skill themselves adequately?

Does it differ between AWS and Amazon?

I feel like my kids 1st grade teacher is being too strict, but I'm not sure if this is normal or I'm being sensitive because it's my child. E.g. she gave him 2/10 for his math homework because he doodled on the page, colored in the circle that has the page number, didn't draw the word problem neatly, wrote his last name under the name line, and says some of his numbers aren't legible. All his answers were correct, except one where he forgot to fill in the blank. Is this normal? X-posting
