When, if ever, do you use “Esquire”, or “Esq.” after your name?

I use it when I correspond with my landlord.

This is the third acceptable use.

Never... ever?

You need to stop asking these questions, OP

Signature block on a court filing when everyone else is doing it.

Only when I want a non-lawyer to know I’m a lawyer. Like when I’m getting jerked around by a contractor.

Never.

Don’t.

My understanding of etiquette is that use of Name, Esq. is only when you are addressing another person, not yourself. No one should ever be putting , Esq. after their own name whether on a legal filing or in a signature block, IMO. Even then, when you're addressing the person you don't use Ms. or Mr. before the name, just Name, Esq.

Never. Court filings have my bar number so even there there’s no need.

“Dr. Important Lawyer, Esq.” is how you should sign every filing and correspondence

Depends on the local practice. Our office is sandwiched between three federal districts. Two don't use Esq, one does. Just look at what the other attorneys are doing.

This is exactly what I do too

I use it on my business card, email signature, and court/agency filings.

Depends on whose ego is asking.

Bay Area, CA - I use it when referring to other attorneys but never myself

Sometimes adding Esq. to my personal email sig block makes life a little easier 🤷

Depends on your local culture. Where I am, mountain west region, it’s behind every lawyers name on every pleading and behind everyone’s name in their email signature. When in Rome...

I’m in NV, and I’ve seen it in every area of practice here. PI, civil litigation, criminal, family court. (All areas I currently practice in and see it used in). In fact, with the exception of an occasional email signature, I’ve never seen it NOT used here.

I only ever see "esq" used on mediation letters and correspondence with AAA where bar numbers aren't used.

Never

Never

Notice provisions of contracts. Mid-Atlantic city where the good lawyers think it’s “supercilious” otherwise.

Planning to switch companies but I'm currently in a consulting position on the bench. I'm worried if I give 2 weeks notice that I'll be let go immediately since I have nothing to transition, but I also don't want to screw over my current company by getting assigned to a project then leaving without notice. Am I just paranoid?

Hi Tax Bowlers, I'm an experienced associate (2yrs) in a Big 4 Transfer Pricing division. I have reached a point in my career where I am considering taking up a professional certification. Several colleagues recommended taking up either ACCA or CFA, however, I see little connection between these certifications and the work that I am currently doing, and what I plan to do in the future. What would you guys suggest? Would it be detrimental to my career if I did not take up any certifications?

Switching consulting agencies atm. Currently I earn way below average at 42k€/p.a + car. Next week I am negotiating with another company wanting to employ me. I am actually bringing in a customer with a fixed 2 year project @ 1000€ all-in/day rate (5 billable days/week). What salary should I aim for - and what bonuses? I would love something around the market average of 65-75k is it realistic even though I am in my mid 20s?

How's Edelman NY? Getting hit up for Health which I've never done. It'll entail moving from advertising to PR/earned creative as they call it, and the Health category. Didn't sound like hard sell pharma, quite a bit of branded video content. I searched on FB, sounded mostly negative culturally (employee fired during Pride month, political, creatives better watch their backs, climate denier) with a few who love it. Figured I'll ask if anything's changed, if it's even worth ... considering.

It really bothers me that I'll never have the confidence men do, and I think this will impact my career. Things like self-promotion to the right people, being highly confident in my abilities (rather than focusing on risks and mitigations), and just naturally walking into every room like I belong. I know these are not only qualities of men and I can develop them too. I'm just frustrated & venting because it feels like I'm trying so hard just to achieve the same goals. Anyone relate? Any wisdom?

If I gave a salary range in my pre-screen and then got an offer in that range, can I negotiate higher? They said 70-80k. I said I’m look for something higher (more in the 90-100k) and they said that should be doable, but really I want something in the 110-120k range (gave a lowball bc didn’t want to turn them off in the first round). How do I got about asking for higher?
