If they ask tell the truth. Don’t volunteer information they don’t ask.
It’s not a crime to “forget” to update your LinkedIn. But I definitely wouldn’t lie on a resume or in interview. Btw new job I was supposed to start got rescinded due to covid after I already left McK. And people/recruiters have been super understanding...I wouldn’t worry about it at all.

I have interviewed multiple people that when asked why they are looking for a new role they say they were laid off due to COVID. Not once has it changed my perception of them. It’s happening to a lot of people. If someone asks, provide the information, if not, no reason to discuss.

How would it be a benefit (ask yourself that).
If you would hire you for that reason ok, I wouldn’t if you said what you just did. No one is going to check if you were laid off, give real reasons why you’d look for a new job, no one is going to verify any of this. If I was hiring, saying you were laid off wouldn’t help your story, prob won’t hurt, but it def doesn’t help so why offer it.
If you’re coming from a company where the general perception is that those laid off were the weakest performers (vs a company that just shut down entire divisions or did layoffs by seniority), I’d suggest avoiding highlighting it. I’d suggest getting ahead of the story and saying something like, “I liked consulting, but wanted to have more ownership and see initiatives through to implementation” or if you’re interviewing with another firm, “xyz firm does a lot more work in industry a, which is my area of greatest interest.” You’re not answering why you left, you’re answering why you think the job you’re interviewing for is a better fit, but they‘ll assume that’s the answer to why you left. If you’re still technically an employee, I’d make sure your resume says “x-Present” and say you still work there if asked (if it’s not a lie). Tl;dr: Spin the story but don’t lie, and short of a company partly or completely shutting down, interviewers will assume you weren’t a top performer if you were laid off.
