When is it okay to lie to the client?

Never.. the fact that you’re asking is worrying

likefunny

...when they ask if you love them!

funny

Hahahaha, it's funny because I actually had this happen to me, and I totally changed the subject instead of responding

It’s not always clear cut. There are perspectives, and shades of gray. Here’s an example Client: is everything OK? Partner: yes, Everything is good. After the meeting I asked, you know we have serious issues. What’s the deal? Partner: The issues we have, we need to handle. She was asking for issues that we need her to resolve

I don’t want to lie... my boss does. I feel very uncomfortable about it. They’re going to lie to our client in my meeting. I don’t feel like this is okay at all, but I haven’t been in consulting for long. I am so disappointed

like

if it's a lie, from a factual perspective, that is never ok. that's different from creative license, which is a consultants way of getting through the day. if they continue lying, they are risking damage to your team and company reputation and I would go above their heads to raise awareness if they continue

like

Let them be the one to lie then. Don’t comment and depending on how big it is say something to your boss privately.

like

When they’re getting to personal or it covers for your manager: “I have a significant other” if they ask you out “Had a thing that I couldn’t miss” if it’s medical or family “Oh, I think they just stepped out to the restroom” if they come in and ask “where’s the manager?” and you know they’re supporting another client bc they’re only covered 50%

like

The lie was about why something wasn’t done. They were gonna blame it on a technical issue when it wasn’t that. But the lie didn’t happen because client didn’t ask so I feel way better. Super interesting discussion, tho

smart

I personally don’t like the idea of lying to the client about anything. I’m okay with spinning the truth or not giving every single details but not outright lying. It’s dishonest. I don’t see the integrity in that.

What is the lie? Is it a flat out lie, or just an exaggeration of something?

This discussion thread is why I left Accenture. I could not knowingly lie. I tried to hang with the SM for a bit but it ended up going south. It will be a career end if you cannot make peace with this as a necessary happening.

A4 - I’m glad you’re so firm that things work well. It will ensure you lead on ethics, rather than make the excuse not to act. Don’t lose that

Never.

It’s usually frowned upon to be a liar 🤥 .

Tech companies are mostly built up of 22ish-40ish year olds (not data, just how it feels) which makes sense as tech has been booming for only 20ish years. What happens in the next 10-20 years when the ones who are older for tech now, become actually old for the workforce. Do we get phased out by young people due to lack of relevancy? Or will we have 50-60 year old SAAS sales people, project managers, etc, still in the space and about to retire?

In my first engagement right now. Manager got frustrated because we are spending more time in one aspect of the project longer than we really should. In my head, there are things I still am getting familiar with. Plus, I don’t know what I don’t know and not sure yet what to look for. Then again, I’m just beating myself up for not knowing either. Tell me it gets better please. How many projects did you guys do until you’re fully comfortable with what you’re doing?

In 4 days, I will be completing 60 days of my lay-off from Deloitte. But, I am not at all worried, and taking time to ensure I get on right team/opportunity, which takes my career ahead. Why can I afford to to so? Coz, I am not on stupid H1B, and just became Canadian citizen 2 months before this pandemic started. Seems like all those 7 years of wait ( i used to call it jail term here due to limited opportunities) was totally worth it in terms of stability it brings. Happy Canada Day!

Goodwin just formalized it’s Recharge Policy. For attorneys who hit hours, they can take a vacation on the firm the next year: $5,000 for juniors, $7,500 for mids and $10,000 for seniors (starting at 5th years). I’ve always felt like Goodwin does a very good job encouraging vacations (most people I know take 3 to 4 weeks including a 2 week vacation). At my last firm, vacations were rare. I’m thrilled with this program, particularly since it helps address burnout.

Would a referral help kick start this again?
