At happy hour.
Ideally, you should never have to ask. A good manager and a good agency should be giving raises proactively. I’ve been in the business several decades and have never asked (for myself). And, of all the hundreds of people I’ve managed, few have had to ask. Inevitably, it is the most mediocre talent in the department that asks first. And usually with a very weak rationale.
Let’s try again: You should NEVER ask for a raise. Instead, you and your boss should set goals that, when reached, will result in a raise. Put another way, the discussion should be something like, “I want to advance myself professionally and financially. Can you help me achieve that? What would you need to see from me?” Does that answer your question? Also, @CW1, I love your use of emojis. You should be an art director instead.
at least a month or two before your anticipated annual review. leadership will already have financials finalized a few weeks leading up to it. try not to miss this window
After you make something awesome for the agency
Nope doesn’t need to be award winning. Just needs to have turned out great and probably picked up by some trades. Probably not enough that the client is happy with it unfortunately.
