When is the busy season for Federal Tax - Corp & Partnership at Big4? Just got hired as an associate and wanted to plan ahead for family vacation. Thanks a lot!

Realistically it could be as long as January thru October 15th depending on your team :(

like

But if you’re on a well managed one then you should have some cushion after filing season on 4/15 and 10/15, for about a month or two

like

Corp & Partnership compliance? What exact group are you going into? Generally those two practices are split, not aware of any group that only does UP-Cs unless it’s consulting. That said, with that description you could be in busy season 1/1-12/31.

like

I was on an up c client for compliance and provision and boy was it hellish. Pretty much year-round deadlines between compliance being twice as nice and no one understanding how to do a provision on a partnership client. I learned a lot, but damn would I not wish that on my worst enemy.

In b4 it might be better to ask when isn’t busy season. Could easily be 9 months a year plus admin, estimates, and fiscal year clients in the downtime…

Ask your teams

How much should I charge a friend to watch 4 dogs at their home over Christmas weekend (2 nights)? The dogs don't have any special needs or medications. I've dog sat for other people in the past but always for free. I also have had dogs of my own for most of my life. I want to start charging people for my services but also want to be reasonable since this is a friend and don't plan to charge a holiday fee. We live in St. Louis. Would $40 per day/night be reasonable?

How much PTO do you typically take in a year? I've only been taking about 1.5-2 weeks and I'm starting to feel burnt out, but it doesn't seem like anyone on my team takes more!

Someone correct me if I’m wrong… for PDM Analysts/Senior Analysts with 93% utilization target, working 40 hours a week, factoring in holidays/collective disconnect days… there’s 1 day of PTO available across the entire performance year in order to meet utilization by Jan 8? Is that even legal? Lol

What are some easy to make, low stress holiday meals for a school holiday staff party? I was "volunteered" by our principal to set it up this year (🙄). I'm making decorated sugar cookies but kind of drawing a blank when it comes to savory dishes. Bonus points if you have any adult holiday themed games or fun drinks to suggest! It's off school property and there will be a bar (thank god), for context.

This may be dumb, but how do you negotiate PTO in a new offer? Are companies usually accepting and flexible about it? My last 2 jobs had unlimited PTO and the one before that had a few more days than what is being currently offered.

Junior litigation associate here, anyone else slow this week so close to the holiday? As a junior do you just ride it out or solicit more work to stay busy? I’m less than stoked to be slow because I just had to take some time off for family reasons. If your answer is to ride it out, what does that mean to you? Do you log in to be available or just keep and eye on your email? Advice appreciated!

Does anyone else feel like they are just falling behind with the price increases for our big ticket items such as cars and homes? Like I started working in 2017 and I realized I couldn’t make it the way I wanted on $105k so now I’m at around $250k and I got some rentals but all of the homes in my area have doubled in price since 2020 so from $500k to $1m or above so I feel like I’m still just as financially tight now and cars seem just as unobtainable as when I first started.

Is FMLA or STD time off count towards total years of service at the company? E.g: If I’ve been with the firm for 1 year and take FMLA for 3 months. When I return from FMLA, would my years/time of service be counted as 1 year and 3 months? Or is FMLA leave considered to be break in service?

Fellow Leads - what does your role generally comprise of? I find it can differ substantially in every company. My own, for example:

- Build yearly strategies/goals for the team (8)
- Performance management with bi-yearly reviews
- Holiday/timesheet approvals
- Bi-weekly 1:1s to help with career goals, general queries/issues and AOB
- Review and improve workflows/processes
- Lead by example when involved in project work (throughput/quality, keeping within budget, meeting deadlines etc.)

I just started a new job around a month ago at what I thought was my dream company. One of the main reasons I left my last job after 8 years was that they suddenly expected us to work weekends, despite already working 50+ hours during the week, with no extra pay or time off. My new job now told me that I’ll be expected to work 3 weekends in a row in August to cover for a coworker who is on vacation. Am I crazy for saying no? It would be 3 straight weeks with no days off and no extra pay.

Planning to fly to India from 🇺🇲 to see parents end of August. I've had friends travel on Air India and United in the past with no issues.

Delta (codes are with KLM and AF) is coming out a little cheaper and I was wondering if anyone has recently travelled to India on it?

Are there any special requirements to pass through Paris and Amsterdam or my negative PCR test will suffice?

Unpopular opinion - Getting fired/let go is a great thing since it will teach you to be more prepared in the future, your job is never 100% safe, you get reminded you are an employee so no need to overwork, you get to find a better job, once you get back on your feet you won’t fear getting fired/let go anymore since you’ve already went through it and found another job!
