Minorities in Marketing

When it comes to minorities getting paid less than their white counterparts (esp. men), do you think it’s more about minorities having difficulties standing up for themselves to make a case for getting a raise/promotion, the bias of their managers/leadership, or both? Asian male here who doesn’t like to toot my own horn or play politics but feel increasingly like it’s required to keep climbing in this industry.

I think there are several different elements in play. For me personally, I’m the first person in my entire extended family to have a corporate job so I had no resources within my family to turn to for things like career advice and learning how to negotiate. I was also raised with a really strong belief in merit so it is a bit unnatural for me to ask for a raise or promotion. Luckily I’ve consistently been rewarded for my hard work through raises and promotions that I haven’t had to ask for because I work my ass off, but I also know that I would probably be making a lot more if I was more aggressive about it. And I think as a WOC, I’ve noticed that WOC tend to negotiate a lot less than their white or male counterparts. I don’t have the audacity in me to ask for something like $70k with only one year of experience but I’ve had several white people and non-white men that I’ve interviewed for more junior positions asking for this or more (there was a white dude the other week with less than two years of experience asking for $120k for a specialist position ...).

Agree with D1 on this. I (WOC) have a very similar situation, where I was unsure of how to negotiate/start promotion talks because I had no point of reference within my family. I was also brought up with a merit-based mindset where I believed I would be awarded for my work vs having to ask or even fight for it. Could be how some minorities (especially those with a lower income immigrant background) are brought up values-wise and not knowing how to navigate the corporate world.

I’m always asking for more money. I want it and I deserve it. I work really hard and I’m good at what I do. Latina females make like 60 cents per $1 for white men. Once I knew that stat all my hesitation around asking for money died out. I refuse to perpetuate that stat, for myself and my community.

Gay asian male here. Know your worth and then be confident in your talent, abilities, and experience to ask for it. Always toot your own horn if it's warranted and not being cocky.

Not sure what you mean by the esp. men part - but in my experience (Asian Woman) I've found that minorities do not want to come across as over ambitious and are willing to settle likely because minorities often are just happy for a seat at the table - leaning into the model minority image. But toot your own horn & ask for your worth - you are your biggest advocate.

I mean white men vs white women. White men make the most out of any race/gender on average.

It's a function of asking for it. Each role has an assigned salary band. As a POC I've realized I've never felt confident to ask for top dollar. Either because I don't want to be the first one to be noticed and fired when recession hits or because I've always felt that I don't have that Universal appeal and knowledge to demand that kind of money. Also, growing up, I've never been encouraged to feel entitled for anything. I've been told I have to prove my worth before expecting an incentive. Hence it's so hard for me to explain to a new company why I need that money. I have grown within the system but definitely slower in some companies than others.

I too have always been naive about asking for more money. I was blessed to have a corporate job and soon “they” will see how hard I work. Promotions came but I had to do a lot of “proving” myself VS my white counterparts.

@EY does your company offer any specials re: student loan refi? For example Deloitte gives an additional 0.25% off Sofi. Kinda not sure if I should be refi-ing now, considering I’m looking at potential $75k -> $100k+ raise if I end up at EY in a few months. Trying to take advantage of low rates while they last tho, not sure what they’ll be like in ~2-3 months time

How low would your raise or bonus need to be to start sending out resumes? If it’s below 5% would 2-3% more make that big of a difference? If it’s 10% or more why haven’t you switched already (1/2)

Us white people need to put ourselves in colored people’s shoes. How would we feel working in a predominantly “colored” work environment where everyone wants us to act “colored” (whether Black, Asian, Latinx)? How comfortable are we going to be day by day when being yourselves mean no promotion and could get us fired? When our fate depends on another race who gives favoritism to their own race? Colored people are the most resilient people in corporate America. The true backbone of our success
